With ace Roy Halladay sidelined for six to eight weeks, Kyle Kendrick will need to take a larger role if the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to stay afloat in the competitive National League East. Kendrick will take the mound on Friday to open a three-game set against the division-rival Miami Marlins. For all of their injuries, the last-place Phillies have won six of eight to sit just three games behind first-place Washington.
Miami registered its most successful single month in franchise history by capping a three-game sweep of the Nationals earlier in the week. All told, the Marlins won 21 of 29 games in May. Giancarlo Stanton led the way with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in the fruitful month, but has traditionally struggled versus Philadelphia. He has just one RBI in his last 12 games versus the Phillies.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Mark Buehrle (5-4, 3.26 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Kyle Kendrick (1-4, 4.10 ERA) p <>
After adjusting to his new surroundings, Buehrle has certainly warmed up to life in South Beach. The 33-year-old has won his last four decisions - including Saturday's 5-3 triumph over San Francisco. Buehrle allowed two runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 solid innings. He is 3-1 in his career versus Philadelphia, but yielded three runs in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss on April 12.
Kendrick was downright dominant in his last trip to the mound, scattering seven hits in a complete-game gem versus St. Louis on Saturday. The 27-year-old has yielded just four runs and 15 hits in his last 22 innings. Kendrick has fared well versus the Marlins, posting a 7-2 career mark.
1. Miami shortstop Jose Reyes carries an 11-game hitting streak into the series - with promising results against Kendrick to boot. He has 10 hits - including a pair of homers - in 26 career at-bats versus the hurler.
2. Philadelphia counterpart Jimmy Rollins has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games.
3. The Phillies took two of three when the teams met at Citizens Bank Park in early April.
