Asians rule

June 29 2008 @ 18:25

I caught a glimpse of the US Open Women’s golf championship won by Inbee Park, a name far too familiar in woman’s golf. Inbee is 19 and won outright beating the likes of recognizable names like Sorenstam, Ochoa, Creamer and Kerr. Inbee won. Great for her. I was pulling for a Park; Angela I think, because she possesses such a sweet swing and tempo. Albeit, I should point out that there were at least 10 players with the Kim name, from Birdie to Young, six with the Lee name ( I dare you to recognize Seo-Jae from Seon Hwa), six with Parks and don’t forget the Yangs and the Yoos, I kid you not. I lost track. Even Johnny Miller could not make them out there were so many of them. Asians. There all over the LPGA.

Why so few on the PGA Tour? You tell me.

Baseball and inter league play finally coming around.

June 27 2008 @ 20:03

Great series are on tap this weekend. The New York subway series (Mets prevailing in the first of a doubleheader), Baltimore and Washington take proceedings in our nation’s Capital and don’t forget the summit in Ohio with the Reds and the Indians. The windy city will be buzzing with two red hot first place teams (the Sox pummelling the Cubs).

In Kansas, a state bonfire is brewing involving the Royals and the Cardinals. Out west, the stage is set for the battle of the bay, San Francisco and Oakland and the Angels, trying to stay above the sky will shake their wings against the Dodgers.

Odd’s and Ends.

Cincinnati Reds +150
Cleveland Indians -158
My pick: Indians

New York Yankees +106
New York Mets -114
My pick: Yankees

Atlanta Braves +140
Toronto Blue Jays -148
My pick: Blue Jays

Top ten Nerds

June 25 2008 @ 22:59

Here’s an absurd article, you can catch the link right here http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/8269306?MSNHPHCP&GT1=39002 .

It is all about a study which ranks the best athlete in the world. Mind you, in all spheres of sports, there are individuals who perform better than others and each sports demand different outputs from each individuals, but does that make them better athletes? Great thinkers can easily decypher the dilemma in an instant. They have all the answers.

Here is their top ten:

10- Alex Rodriguez (baseball)

9- Ronaldo de Assis Moreira (soccer)

8- Jeremy Warriner (long distance runner)

7- Liu Xiang (hurdles)

6- Sidney Crosby (hockey)

5- Roger Federer (tennis)

4- Ladanian Tomlinson (football)

3- Floyd Mayweather (boxing)

2- Lebron James (basketball)

1- Roman Sebrle (decathlon)

Wouldn’t you know! There is not a sport mentioned twice.

Lebron James at #2 is so ridiculous, it boggles the mind, the experts argue the fact that he ranks up there because of his youth. Gimme a break. At 6’8” and 285 at the scale, he would sink in a swim meet, probably would swing the clubs like Barkley, clip the hurdles with his big toe and let’s face it, no skates could hold his weight. James ain’t Bo.

ARod at # 10 is also an aberration; he is 32 and getting fatter by the day. Yeah, he can hit a baseball and that’s about it. In fact, the Yankees would rest his ass in a doubleheader.

Others I have no problems with because they move all the time. Especially Tomlinson who gets licked by kids resembling Lebron James’stature and gets up again. It is abuse in his case, not a sport, a lad eluding defensive ends, linebackers and safeties like Tomlinson does makes him a special athlete and confronting them makes him an even greater one. He gets my vote.

Most notable snubs: Tiger Wood (Golf): have you seen the shoulders on the guy? Think, trigger, and shoot at the pin, 14 majors and one bad knee which he did not get shooting hoops, I assure you. Rob Brind’amour (hockey): At 37, the conditioning freak is a workhorse and puck handling youngsters makes him a stud in my book.

No Tour de France winners on this list, my? Cycling up a mountain would certainly qualify, but I digress.

What's for dessert?

June 24 2008 @ 22:49

Start your yawning everyone, Euro 2008 resumes tomorrow. What? You thought it was over? No way! The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming but wait, no, they’re still in Austria or Switzerland, Whatever.

The final “four” of Euro 2008 is definitely not one’s flavour of the month. It may even leave you with a bad taste in your mouth? Let’s examine shall we? Germany, Turkey, Russia and Spain. What a splendid foursome would you not say? What’s for dinner? Zwiebelkuchen (onion pie), Tulumba, (unleavened dough lump),beetroot Borsch (just the name makes me cringe) and the whole enchilada. Ok, that is Mexican but you get my drift.

Bon Appétit!

Odds and Ends

 Germany/Turkey: Pick Germany

Spain/Russia: Pick Spain

Celebrating George Carlin in seven words….or more.

June 23 2008 @ 23:15

George Carlin, a bright “motherfucker” and a standout cerebral comedian, a fighter of free speech who simply didn’t give a “shit” about the “cocksuckers” who tried to mollify his wit has sadly left us. Here is a link about how he made us care: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/Television/story?id=5227398&page=1

A self-called casual sports fan, Carlin had some great insights about the sports world, didn’t think much about mascots or about some team names (the Fighting Jews) and on the sport of hockey which he did not consider a sport, which you can watch here, http://youtube.com/watch?v=JrYBwivKhoI, this segment alone is better than “tits”.

I hope that the man up there (Carlin always believed that GOD had to be a man because a woman could never cause this much chaos) who he so often refer to is actually a man and not a fat “cunt” with an attitude. Otherwise, he’s going to hell.

Your Irish soul is safe in our arms George…”Fuck”! I must be drunk for writing that stuff. I never write stuff like that. George was a master with stuff. He loved to talk about stuff. Sorry George, your stuff can wait, got to take a “piss”.

RIP George.

Wimbledon is upon us and nobody cares.

June 21 2008 @ 19:33

The sport of men's tennis has gone astray. Lore was the time when loud-mouthed, graceful, headstrong antagonists of yesteryear were viewed as symbols in their respective countries with flags waving, cast with epic duals impeded with intense rivalries. Today, tennis has become an international mess with super serves, super egos and no substance. An all around bore fest.

Sure, the lack of an American superstar has a lot do with it; name one American player who has won a major championship when Andre Agassi was around? Andy Roddick. Yes! Give the man a cigar. Were has he been? The lad with a booming serve and no game has a better record courting ladies than the men on the court. James Blake? The no-talent American would have never cracked the top 20 in the 80’s or the 90’s.

In fact, Aaron Krickstein, a lovable journeyman, who’s claim to fame was to take favorites to extreme while capitulating in the end, would have kicked anyone's ram any time today but received little recognition for his career, for the talent of his generation was so deep.

Now, it is a Nadal/Federer showdown with the Swiss who conducts himself with such grace, a legitimate poster boy for modern tennis, an up to date day Ivan Lendl with better hair. Remember how Lendl was viewed back in his heyday? Then there is Nadal, a Spaniard who cannot find a way to win on any other court but clay and then, there’s the occasional no name which you can’t pronounce emerging from the pack grabbing the spotlight for a week and in no time, long forgotten…Marat Safin anyone?

Where are the icons like McEnroe, Connors, Lendl, Agassi ,Borg, Edberg, Wilander, Nastase, Vilas, Gerulaitis, Muster, Cash, Becker  and oh! someone named Sampras. All gents with moxy. Why? Because they all played in their 30’s except for Borg who may have well has started the trend of retiring before getting one’s driver’s license.

Mind you, I like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. They are a class act all around. Federer, like Pete Sampras of old, is a virtuoso on the court and he is splendid to watch. Ironically, both Sampras and Federer have never won the French, and that puts them in a group of players without actually dominating their sports, unlike Tiger Woods in golf, Sampras may have more majors under his belt than any other tennis legend but this dent in Paris will forever be remembered as a severe failure in what was a brilliant career. Same with Federer, the shellacking he took at the hands of Nadal this year was maybe a presage or a surrender regarding his chance of ever winning the French Open as long as Nadal is in the picture.

Nevertheless both Federer and Nadal are men caught in a game with a “self” promoted approach where the individual is grander than the sport. If there is not a final between the two stars, we suddenly loose interest. Back then, we watched it all, no matter who was in the final because we would be witnessing the likes of two players with an attitude, not just two players with a name.

Odds and ends

Both Croatia and the Netherlands went sour on us.

Spain -130

Italy Even

My Pick: Italy

Roaring no more! the Tiger is suddenly silent.

June 19 2008 @ 19:37

Tiger Woods has just announced that he will take the year off after an epic display of resilience and a mind boggling test of nerves hobbled by a bum knee and yet went on to capture the US Open.

Tiger is leaving us this year, and that opens up the field for the rest of the hackers in relentless pursuit of the #1 spot which will likely fall on Phil Mickelson’s lap.

Plus, two more majors are up for grabs namely the British Open and the PGA Championships and the absence of Tiger Woods will make the air more breathable for rest of the golfing contingent. Don’t forget the Ryder Cup which will be held on American soil this September and a Tigerless US team will rest its hopes on Lefty, Furyk and …. a few journeymen. Good luck lads.

One area where Woods could boost business is gambling.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said the bookmaker was refunding money to those who bet on Woods winning two or three majors because he won't be playing the British Open or U.S. PGA Championship. Anyone who bet on him winning one was paid off. Those who bet on Woods winning no majors or all four have already lost. My question is: When Tiger resumes his playing days, how many tournaments will it take him to win?

Never bet against the Germans

The Nationalmannschaft is indeed eternal. Waning after less than brilliant clashes with feeble adversaries (two so-so victories against Poland and Austria and a defeat to Croatia), the Germans demonstrated that they remain a formidable machine even faced with an opponent technically superior. Trailing 2-0, Portugal made things interesting but Germany is almost unbeatable when leading by that margin. With this victory against a powerhouse like Portugal, Germany is my bet to reach the finals and yes, to win it all.

Odds and Ends

Friday, June 20th.

Croatia -250

Turkey +185

My pick: Croatia

Saturday, June 21st

The Netherlands -250

Russia +185

My pick: The Netherlands
