Wisconsin tailback Montee Ball had a season for the ages in 2011 and he finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting. Can Ball in 2012 become the third Badger to bring home college football’s top individual award? He opened as the second favorite on Bovada Sportsbook’s Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy at 5/1 to do so.
Ball stunned many by not turning pro after a record-setting junior season in which he led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl. Ball was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and earned consensus All-America honors after tying Barry Sanders' NCAA record for single-season touchdowns with 39. Ball scored at least two touchdowns in each of the first 13 games, an NCAA record.
He led the country in rushing with 1,923 yards, the third-best total in school history and seventh-best in Big Ten history, and led the country with 2,229 yards from scrimmage (1,923 rushing, 306 receiving). He destroyed the Big Ten record with his 33 rushing touchdowns and his 10 100-yard rushing games were tied for the most in school history. In five games against ranked teams he averaged 164.0 all-purpose yards and scored 15 TDs – he capped that by running for 164 yards and a TD on 32 carries in a loss vs. Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
Two Badgers have won the Heisman Trophy, both running backs: Alan Ameche in 1954 and Ron Dayne in 1999. But working against Ball is how quarterbacks have dominated the Heisman. Since Dayne’s ’99 win, only one running back has won the Heisman: Alabama’s Mark Ingram in 2009. Tide running back Trent Richardson finished one spot above Ball in last year’s voting despite inferior numbers.
Wisconsin, which has to break in new QB Danny O’Brien after Russell Wilson used up his eligibility last season, opens the 2012 season Sept. 1 vs. Northern Iowa.
