Adrian Peterson is not going to have to wait long to try and stick it to his old team as New Orleans pays a trip to Minnesota to start their season. Both teams could be among those mediocre 2016 teams ready to take a major leap forward this season.

New Orleans as per usual had one of the best offenses in the league last year as Drew Brees threw for another 5000-yard season. It was the fifth in his storied career, the rest of NFL has four such seasons combined. His number one option Brandin Cooks though is gone, traded to the Patriots for draft picks to shore up one of the worst defenses in the league.

The Saints still have Michael Thomas as a WR 1 and added speedster Ted Ginn Jr. and TE Coby Fleener as pass options. But the addition of Peterson to a ground game that already has Mark Ingram likely means a change in the offensive philosophy to be more run heavy, and to control the clock to help out the defense and protect their 38-year old signal caller. The Saints also drafted OT Ryan Ramczyk with the pick they got from the Patriots to help in that endeavor.

With their own first round pick they took CB Marshon Lattimore and will be looking for an elite contribution right away. They also added Manti Te’o at linebacker and Alex Okafor (Cardinals) up front to help shore up the defense.

Minnesota looked dominant in starting out 6-0 last year led by the defense, but continued injuries to the offensive line and Peterson eventually caught up to them. Now they get QB Sam Bradford back with a full offseason to expand the offense. That’s because Stefon Diggs was a revelation at receiver in his rookie year and they also added the electric Dalvin Cook to the backfield. They are hoping the new line led by LT Riley Reiff (Lions) and RT Mike Remmers (Panthers) will be stable this year. All told they have four new starters from those who started the season last year, and the fifth -Joe Berger- is shifting from center to right guard.

The defense should continue to be a strength of this team with great run stoppers up front, LB Anthony Barr in the middle and a solid secondary led by Xavier Rhodes and Harrison Smith. They were third last year allowing 314.9 YPG.

Bovada has the Vikings listed as 3-point favorites and the game's total is sitting at 48 according to MyBookie.

New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings Week 1 NFL Vegas Betting Odds & Trends

New Orleans:
New Orleans is 9-3-1 ATS in its last 13 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of New Orleans's last 6 games
New Orleans is 8-1-1 ATS in its last 10 games on the road

Minnesota:
Minnesota is 14-7 ATS in its last 21 games
Minnesota is 3-8 SU in its last 11 games
Minnesota is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 games at home

Next up:
New Orleans home to New England Sunday, September 17
Minnesota at Pittsburgh Sunday, September 17

The Bottom Line:
The Vikings are -3 favorites and the big question for me is how quick will that new offensive line gel. The Saints offense should put pressure on Minnesota to score, but I do think the Vikings D is for real and should be enough to help produce a close win. The Pick: Vikings 21-17.
