USC QB Matt Barkley Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy

The University of Southern California is tied for the most Heisman winners in history with seven – well, the school has had seven winners, but running back Reggie Bush’s was vacated in 2005. Can senior quarterback Matt Barkley become the latest Trojan to take home college football’s top award? He is the 3/1 favorite on Bovada Sportsbook’s Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.

Barkley, who is looking to become 11th QB in the past 12 seasons to win the award and first USC signal-caller since Matt Leinart in 2004, finished sixth in the voting a year ago. He started all 12 games for USC last season, completing 308 of 446 passes (69.1%) for 3,528 yards with 39 TDs and just seven interceptions. Barkley was eighth nationally in passing efficiency (161.2) and 16th in total offense (295.2). His 39 TD passes broke Leinart's Pac-12 and USC season record and were third most in the nation. His 69.1% completion percentage broke Rob Johnson's school record. His 308 completions in 2011 tied for second on the USC season list and was one shy of Carson Palmer’s school record.

Barkley set four USC game records in 2011: completions (35 vs. UCLA), pass yardage (468 vs. Arizona), TD passes (6 vs. Colorado and UCLA) and total offense (470 vs. Arizona). In his final six games of 2011, he threw 23 TDs with just three interceptions. He threw for more than 300 yards six times in 2011 (including twice over 400 yards) and had at least four TD passes five times.

It’s likely that Barkley would have been a Top-10 pick in the 2012 NFL draft had he left school a year early, but he shocked many by deciding to return for his senior season. For the first time since Barkley was a freshman, the Trojans are eligible for postseason play after the two-year ban the school got for Bush’s infractions. Barkley will have arguably the best receiving tandem in the nation in Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. The Trojans, a national title favorite, opener their season Sept. 1 vs. Hawaii.
