Deepest Field Vie for Last Major of the Year with PGA Championship

US PGA Championship 2018 Major Tournament Expert Picks, Betting Odds and Preview

The last major of the year is upon us and the U.S. PGA Championship, which celebrates its 100th birthday, will be the stage for what was used to be called the last shot at glory for one of the deepest field in any majors this season. Indeed, the US PGA Championship is by far the most competitive event of the four majors with 98 of the Top-100 player set to converge Thursday morning on the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bellerive Country Club, a 7,317-yard par 70 hosts its third major championship after being the venue for the 1965 U.S. Open and the 1982 PGA Championship which Nick Price won. Located in the suburbs of St. Louis, Bellerive was once set to host the WGC American Express Championship in 2001. Unfortunately, the tournament was never held following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City.

Defending champion,  Justin Thomas , who enters the event as a 12/1 second favorite, according to Bovada Sportsbook, has hit his recent good form at just the right time, winning the WGC-US PGA Championship, last week and he's won back-to-back tournaments before (Woods in 2007 and Rory McIlroy in 2014 both won the US PGA after winning at Firestone) but the fact that Woods is the only player to win back-to-back US PGAs is slightly concerning.

Dustin Johnson, who is ranked No. 1 in the world is the favorite at 8/1 odds to nab his second career major, won the Canadian Open two weeks ago and followed it up with a T-3 last week at the WGC-US PGA Championship. Johnson has been on another level for the past three years, and with his improved wedge game, he should be able to master all of Bellerive's brainteasers. McIlroy and Jason Day 18/1 were both playing well last week before Sunday struggles.

McIlroy 12/1 has a win and three runners-up finishes worldwide this season. However, the Ulsterman hasn't won a major since the PGA Championship in 2014, so he's due. Brooks Koepka 20/1 hasn't played much this season due to a wrist injury this spring, but he has a win at the U.S. Open and a fifth-place finish last week. He looks poised to rack up majors, and he could find his third this week. Jordan Spieth 22/1 has a chance to complete the career grand slam which would make him the youngest ever behind Woods.

29 of the Top-30 players in the FedEx Cup standing will thread the course on Thursday with Dustin Johnson leading the way as he enters the event as the heavy favorite at +700, according to Bovada Sportsbook, to capture his fourth victory this season. Champion Golfer of the Year Francisco Molinari +2500 will also be in action this week. The Italian will be joined by the Open’s runners up Rory McIlroy +1000 and Justin Rose +1200 with eight-time champion Tiger Woods +1200 and Jordan Spieth rounding up the Top-5.

The Pick: Rickie Fowler 22/1 (+2200).
