It’s one of the most anticipated UFC bouts of the year on Saturday night at UFC 148 from Las Vegas when middleweight champion Anderson Silva defends his belt against Chael Sonnen, the second time the two have fought in their careers. Silva stunned Sonnen at UFC 117 in August 2010 after Sonnen dominated the fight for the first four rounds. However, the champion finally managed to sink in a triangle choke that forced Sonnen to tap out in the fifth round. It was easily the most trouble Silva (31-4) has been in his UFC career.

Since then, Silva (31-4) has handily defended his title twice, beating Vitor Belfort by first-round knockout at UFC 126 and then Yushin Okami by second-round TKO at UFC 134 in August of last year. He has successfully defended the 185-pound title a UFC-record nine times since 2006. The 37-year-old Silva has yet to lose in the UFC, with 14 straight victories. Eighteen of Silva’s career wins have come by knockout or TKO and just seven by decision.

In the first fight, Sonnen repeatedly beat Silva to the punch, surprisingly getting the better of the standup before taking the fight to the mat and beating up Silva more. This went on for four full rounds and the first few minutes of the fifth before Sonnen's Achilles' heel -- submission defense -- saved the day for "The Spider" as he clamped on the triangle armbar to elicit the tapout at 3:10 of the fifth.

Sonnen (27-11-1) bounced back from that Silva loss with a second-round submission of Brian Stann at UFC 136 and then a unanimous decision over Michael Bisping at UFC on Fox 2 in January. Sonnen isn’t the knockout artist Silva is, with 16 of Sonnen’s career wins coming via decision.

This fight was originally planned for UFC 147 on June 23 in Silva’s native Brazil but at the time the UFC couldn’t secure a venue to it was moved to Las Vegas.
