Thursday Night Football Odds & Aengus Moorehead NFL Picks: New England Patriots vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

New England Patriots vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Patriots: 2-2-0 (1-0-0 V)
Buccaneers: 2-1-0 (2-0-0 H)
When: 8:25 PM ET, Thursday, October 5, 2017
Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida

The reeling New England Patriots will look to get back in the winner’s circle and regain their Super Bowl form as they get ready to meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a rare non-conference game with the showdown set to be staged Thursday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida. The Patriots open up as a six-point favorites, according to Bovada Sportsbook, with the total sitting at 56 points. This will be the first meeting between the two rivals in Tampa Bay since 2009.

As bad as they have been at home this season giving 36 points on average while losing twice in three games, let us not forget that the Patriots went a perfect 8-0 on the road last season while covering the numbers on seven occasions. Their lone game away from Foxboro in 2017 was at New Orleans in Week 2 where the Saints have reigned supreme historically and the Patriots manhandled the Saints by scoring 36 points while only giving up their lowest total of the season with 20 to Drew Brees and co.

The Patriots lead the league in total offense with 423.8 yards per game and 32.3 points a game which is most in football but will be facing a Tampa Bay defensive unit that ranks 7th in total defense. Obviously, the problem with the Patriots is their stopping unit which is dead last in almost every defensive categories which is mind-boggling considering that they finished 6th last year in total defense. But like last season, the unit started slowly and got much better as the season winded down.

The Buccaneers are 2-1 this season but their two wins came against a couple of teams that are a combined 1-7 in the Bears and lately the Giants. However, if the Patriots shows up without an improved defense, quarterback Jameis Winston could have a field day this Thursday. Winston could also have help with running back Doug Martin who returns after a suspension and could spark a moribund ground attack that has averaged 84.7 yards per game which is good for 26th in the league.

Bovada has the Patriots listed as 6-point favorites and the game's total is sitting at 55½ according to MyBookie.

On the NFL Football Moneyline Odds at BetOnline Patriots are the Favorite at -256.

The Bottom Line:
While Patriots’ QB Tom Brady and his offense will score their share of points, I just don’t think that New England’s defensive unit can be fixed on a short week. The Patriots may eke out a win on the road but the six-point spread is just too much to cover. Take Tampa Bay +6 and the Over 56
