Sunday Night Football Betting Odds & Liev Jackson Free Picks: Green Bay Packers vs Detroit Lions

Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions

Packers: 9-6-0 (3-4-0 V)
Lions: 9-6-0 (6-1-0 H)
When: 8:30 PM ET, Sunday, January 1, 2017
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan

Green Bay enters this game as the hottest team in the league with Aaron Rodgers in peak form. They may have officially seized the title as the team no one wants to face in the playoffs. The last step towards one of the NFL’s most dramatic turnarounds will be to win here turning a 4-6 record into a ten- win season.

All Rodgers has done through the past six games is throw 14 touchdowns without an interception. His QB rating over that time sits at 119.2.

The biggest difference is that his WR 1 Jordy Nelson shook off the rust and fear that comes with missing the previous season with a torn ACL.

He’s caught five touchdowns in the last four weeks and gone over the century mark in three of those games. That has also allowed Davante Adams to settle into his role as the deep threat specialist putting up a solid 69-966-10 season.

What’s more in Ty Montgomery they’ve found enough plays out of the backfield to help keep defenses honest. Versus Chicago two weeks ago he went for a 16-162-2 day.

The defensive secondary continues to remain a weak spot and they allowed 885 yards the last two weeks with 707 coming in the air to Matt Barkley and Sam Bradford.

Previous to the last two weeks the defense was on a roll giving up a total of 36 points over a three-week span to the Eagles, Texans and Seahawks.

Detroit in the meanwhile was 9-4 three weeks ago needing one more win to book a playoff spot and cement their spot as one of the surprise teams of the season. Two losses later to the Giants and Cowboys and they are still looking for that elusive win.

What’s worse is that the Cowboys exposed a defense that had been playing lights out for weeks. They had limited opponents to 20 points or less for eight straight weeks before Dallas hung 42 points on them.

The 375 yards allowed was also their worst since a week seven loss to the Redskins and the 164 on the ground was a season worst.

Part of the problem is that their best CB, Darius Slay missed the game and Dak Prescott and Dez Bryant took full advantage. And Ezekiel Elliot took advantage of the openings running behind the best offensive line in the game. Slay’s still listed as questionable but is expected to play and so is their best LB DeAndre Levy.

It is also three straight weeks where the offense has gained 324 yards or less and scored 21 or less. They’ve also had two turnovers in each of those games. Matthew Staffford has been the king of the fourth quarter comebacks this year, but he likely won’t get the chance if Detroit doesn’t show up for the first three.

Zach Zenner looked great in the first half against Dallas, but then Detroit abandoned the run once Stafford opened the third with an interception.

Golden Tate is up to 1000 yards on the year and had a 8-122-0 game two weeks ago versus New York. Another performance like that will be needed here.

Green Bay is 10th averaging 363.5 YPG and sixth scoring 26.7 PPG. They are 20th allowing 361.0 YPG and 13th with 21.8 PPG

Detroit is 23rd averaging 334.2 YPG and 21st scoring 21.5 PPG. They are 15th allowing 348.5 YPG and 22nd with 24.3 PPG.

Bovada has the Packers listed as 3½-points favorites and the game's total is sitting at 49½ according to MyBookie.

The Lions were a 42-21 loser in their most recent outing on the road against the Cowboys. They failed to cover the +6.5-point spread as underdogs, while the total score (63) made winners of OVER bettors.

Green Bay was a 38-25 winner in its last match at home against the Vikings. They covered the -6.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score of 63 sent OVER bettors to the payout window.
