The reeling Houston Astros will attempt to get back in the win column and snap a four-game losing streak as they continue their 11-game road trip with a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels in a AL West showdown with the opener set to be staged Tuesday night at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. This will be the next to last series between the two division rivals with the Astros leading the season series 8-5 thus far this year.

The Astros entered their last series having won seven in a row but stumbled badly over the weekend as they were swept in four games by their division rival Oakland. In fact, the A’s manhandled Houston to the tune of 41 runs on 51 hits during the skid. The Astros had a great chance to avoid the sweep with Dallas Keuchel on the mound Sunday but the ace was tagged for 4 runs in 5 2/3 and the A’s got to the bullpen for 6 more runs in a 10-2 rout.

The Angels snapped a three-game losing streak when they won the finale of their three-game set against the Mariners. Mike Trout and Luis Valbuena each homered in the Angels’ 5-2 win on Sunday. With the win, the Angels moved within a game of the Minnesota Twins for the second spot in the AL Wild Card race. For the Astros, their magic number to clinch the AL West stands at seven games. They lead the Angels by 13 games in the division.

RH Justin Verlander (11-8, 3.74 ERA) will attempt to notch his 3rd consecutive win as he takes the mound for the Astros while RH Garrett Richards (0-0, 1.13 ERA) looks for his first win of the season as he gets the nod for the Angels.

After a tough first half, Verlander has righted the ship since the All-Star break in which he holds a 6-2 record with a 2.33 ERA in 11 starts. In his first start since being acquired by the Astros last week, the 34-year old allowed a run on six hits and a homerun with seven strikeouts in six innings in a 3-1 win over the Seattle Mariners a week ago. The Virginia native is 6-8 with a 3.79 ERA in 17-career starts against the Angels.

After missing five months with a bicep strain, Richards made his first start for the Angels back on September 5. The 29-year old pitched only once back in April when the injury occurred. The plan for Richards in his return was to for him to throw around 50 pitches or 3 innings and that’s what he did against Oakland when he allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings on 52 pitches. The 6-year pro is 5-3 with a 3.90 ERA in 9-career starts against the Astros.

Mybookie Sportsbook has the Astros favorites at 135-moneyline with the total sitting at 8.
