Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Pirates: 58-58 (26-32 V)
Blue Jays: 54-61 (29-28 H)
When: 1:07 PM ET, Saturday, August 12, 2017
Where: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
TV: MLB Network, AT&T SportsNet, Pittsburgh, Sportsnet

Fresh off another victory, the Pittsburgh Pirates will attempt to climb to a winning record for the first time this entire season as they resume hostilities with the Toronto Blue Jays in an interleague showdown with Game 2 set to be staged Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto. The two clubs met on Friday for the first time since May of 2014 and it was Pittsburgh’s first visit north of the border since 2011.

The Pirates have enjoyed a good stretch of late winning seven of their last nine games including a 4-2 win in the opener Friday night. Despite just four hits on the night, the Pirates crossed the plate on four occasion in the third inning thanks to two Toronto errors that proved to be the difference in the final score. Pirates’ starter Jameson Taillon snapped a three-game winless streak en route to seventh win of the season.

The Pirates have a chance to rise above the .500 mark for the first time this year if they can muster a victory on Saturday. They are 7 games back of the Diamondbacks in the Wild Card race but have a better chance in their division as they sit only 2.5 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central. The Blue Jays have been marred by inconsistency throughout the season and it shows in the standings as they are last in the AL East 11.5 games behind Boston.

RH Trevor Williams (5-4, 4.17 ERA) will look to keep his recent fine form as he gets the call for the Pirates while RH Chris Rowley (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first start as a pro in Game 2 of this series for the Blue Jays.

Williams has been a pleasant surprise for the Pirates since being promoted to the starting rotation back on May 8. It didn’t start well that day when he allowed 6 runs in 3 innings against the Dodgers but he has since settled down quite nicely by going 4-2 with a 3.56 ERA in his last 16 starts. The 25-year pitched his best game of the season in his last outing in which he threw seven scoreless innings with just one hit allowed against the Tigers last Monday. The California native will face the Blue Jays for the first time in his career.

Rowley will make his major league debut for the Blue Jays on Saturday. The 26-year didn’t play until 2016 because he was serving in the US Army for two years prior to returning to the game. Last year in his full season, Rowley posted a 3.49 ERA in 123 2/3 innings with Single-A Dunedin both as a starter and reliever. This season, the Atlanta native split his time between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo where he combined for a 2.29 ERA in 106 1/3 innings. Rowley has given up 8 runs in 31 innings in his last five starts in Buffalo.

Mybookie Sportsbook has the Blue Jays favorites at 110-moneyline with the total sitting at 9½.

MLB Runline Odds at BetOnline the Blue Jays were favored by -1½ (+175)
