San Diego Chargers Must Prove their Worth against the Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs (+8.5) at San Diego Chargers

Thursday night football has not been exactly filled with epic games lately. This one falls under the damp squib category when the hapless Chiefs take on the much dysfunctional San Diego Chargers, but I digress.

San Diego literally could not handle the elements last week when they fell to the Cleveland Browns 7-6. The Chargers have had a history of failures against Eastern opponent-especially away from the sunny confines of Southern California- late in the calendar but midway through the season and their hopes of a winning record on the line, they could not even jangle one of the poorest squad in the AFC.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs lost their starting QB Brady Quinn in yet another loss, this time, against the Oakland Raiders. Matt Cassel will get the start. It's not going to matter.

After Todd Haley's departure as coach for the Chiefs, Romeo Crennel took over the helm and led his team with significant success last year. However, while Haley has rejuvenated the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense as OC, Crennel has been mostly outmatched by his counterparts and talks about his eventual demise are stirring.

A promising 3-1 start, which included a 37-20 drubbing of the Chiefs in the City of Fountains on Sept. 30, has morphed into three straight losses for Norv Turner and the Chargers, including last Sunday's impotent 7-6 setback in the rain and wind against the Browns.

And with Denver and Peyton Manning firing on all cylinders, the Chargers must do what they do best, which leads to my take.

My Take: Chargers are in a dire situation and the Chiefs are salvaging what was once a season. When these circumstances converge, the one team with greater pressure usually conquer. Chargers win but Cassel and Chiefs keep it close. Chiefs cover.
