The University of Nebraska has had three Heisman winners but none since quarterback Eric Crouch in 2001. This season, the Huskers have two contenders for college football’s top award in tailback Rex Burkhead and dual-threat quarterback Taylor Martinez. Burkhead is 25/1 on Bovada Sportsbook’s Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy, while Martinez is 30/1.
Martinez was on the Heisman watch list heading into last season, Nebraska’s first in the Big Ten, but took a bit of a step back from his freshman season. As a sophomore in 2011, Martinez started all 13 games and accounted for 2,963 yards of total offense, the third-highest total in school history.
Martinez threw for 2,089 yards, the sixth-highest single-season passing total in Nebraska history, and rushed for 874, the ninth-best single season in school history. He has produced the top total offense seasons in school history for both a freshman and a sophomore and sits in third place on the career total offense list with 5,559 yards.
Burkhead exploded last season as a junior, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors after rushing for 1,357 yards, the most by any Nebraska player since 2002 and tops for a NU running back since 1997, and 15 touchdowns. He had seven 100-yard rushing games and was a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award.
Oftentimes it’s hard for a single back to get tons of carries in the Nebraska run-heavy offense, but Burkhead carried the ball at least 20 times in eight games and in the regular-season finale against Iowa had school-record 38 rushing attempts for 160 yards. Burkhead also showed his receiving ability with 21 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
Nebraska opens the 2012 season on Sept. 1 against Southern Miss.
