QB Landry Jones Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy

Heading into the 2011 college football season, the Oklahoma Sooners were the odds-on favorite to win the national title and quarterback Landry Jones was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Thinks didn’t quite work out for the Sooners or Jones. But he’s back for his senior season and opened as the 7/1 fourth-favorite on Bovada’s Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.

In 2010, Jones was 405-for-617 passing (65.6 percent) for 4,718 yards 38 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions in leading OU to a Fiesta Bowl victory. He set the school single-season completion record and in attempts (leading the nation in both). Jones had multiple TD passes in 11 of 14 outings, threw for 300-plus yards in 10 games and was No. 2 in the country in total passing yards and TDs.

Last year, however, Jones slipped to 355-for-562 passing (63.2 percent) for 4,463 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 picks. But Jones was hurt in part by a season-ending injury top receiver Ryan Broyles. And Jones still threw for over 400 yards in an OU-record five games. He also broke the Oklahoma single-game passing record with 505 yards vs. Kansas State and broke the OU career passing TDs mark with five TDs vs. the Wildcats. He did struggle at the end of the season, throwing just one touchdown vs. six interceptions and more than 260 yards just once in the final four games as OU slipped to the Insight Bowl. Jones already owns 13 school records, including being OU's all-time passing leader with 12,379 career yards. That is No. 5 on all-time Big 12 career passing list.

A quarterback has won the Heisman 10 of the past 11 seasons, so that bodes well for Jones. However, he will have to break in several inexperienced receivers as Broyles has moved on to the NFL and coach Bob Stoops suspended a few pass-catchers in May and they aren’t likely to be back. Oklahoma opens the season Sept. 1 vs. UTEP.
