Olympic Swimming 400m Individual Medley Odds on Phelps and Lochte

Michael Phelps won a record eight gold medals in the pool for the United States in Beijing in 2008, including a first-place result in the 400m individual medley. However, with that event on tap for Saturday, Phelps finds himself trailing teammate Ryan Lochte on the Bovada Sportsbook odds list.

And that's because Lochte has taken over the event, winning the gold medal in the 400m individual medley at the FINA World Championships in 2011 with Phelps not in the field, and then beating Phelps head-to-head in the race at the U.S. Olympic Trials last month.

So heading into Saturday's race Lochte is pegged as the 8/11 favorite on the Olympic swimming odds at Bovada Sportsbook, with Phelps second on that list at 1/1 to win the gold medal.

Laszlo Cseh of Hungary (22/1), Yuya Horihata of Japan (33/1), Kosuke Hagino of Japan (40/1), Chengxiang Wang of China (66/1), Thomas Fraser-Holmes of Australia (80/1) and Zhixian Yang of China (100/1) round out the betting options for the race. Horihata finished third in the event at the 2011 World Championships.

The women's 400m individual medley will also be contested Saturday, with Elisabeth Beisel of the United States the 4/5 favorite to win the race; Beisel came out on top in the event at the 2011 World Championships, and was fourth in the race in Beijing at just 15 years old.

Great Britain's Hannah Miley, who finished second behind Beisel at the World Championships, is then at 4/5 odds for the race at Bovada Sportsbook, with Australia's Stephanie Rice (who won bronze at the World Championships) then at 5/1 odds. Rice won the gold medal in the women's 400m individual medley in Beijing.

Elsewhere around the pool on Saturday, Sun Yang of China is the favorite at 4/5 to win the gold in the men's 400m freestyle ahead of South Korea's Park Tae-Hwan (3/2); Tae-Hwan won the gold in the event in Beijing and at the 2011 World Championships, while Yang was second at the World Championships last year.

As well, the defending world champions from the Netherlands are the 4/5 favorites to win the gold medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay on Saturday, with the United States (second at the 2011 World Championships) pegged at 11/8 odds. The Netherlands and the United States finished 1-2 at this event in Beijing, with Australia (6/1) taking the bronze.
