New England Should Be a Cinch to Claim their Tenth Consecutive AFC East Title

New England Patriots 2018 NFL Season Preview, Vegas Odds & Predictions

Despite the major disappointment of coming up short on claiming their sixth Super Bowl victory last season against the surprising Philadelphia Eagles, the New England Patriots’ notorious inclination at blocking out distractions have already disappeared and until further notice, the Patriots will still be in the conversation as a potential challenger to reach their eleventh Super Bowl come next February.

They have participated in three of the last four big shows and there is no reason to doubt that they will not do it again, because that’s what they do. The ageless Tom Brady notched his third-career league MVP at age 40 last season and his superhuman regimen could allow him to enjoy yet another MVP-caliber campaign.

Brady, who turned 41 last week, will be without speedy wide receiver Brandin Cooks as the talented but oft-troubled pass catcher has gone on to greener pastures. Danny Amendola is gone as well but his departure should not affect the receiving corps as Julian Edelman returns after missing all of last year with a torn right ACL.

Edelman has been suspended for four games for PED but considering he was out all year, his absence should not be that big of a deal. The Patriots also moved on from Malcolm Mitchell but New England brought in Jordan Matthews from Buffalo and more recently Eric Decker from Tennessee, who could thrive under the leadership of Brady. Chris Hogan and TE Rob Gronkowski should as always, be heavily targeted as sure-handed pass catchers.

With RB Dion Lewis fleeing to Tennessee in the off-season, the Patriots addressed the issue by drafting Georgia’s Sony Michel in the first round as his replacement. Michel has the same set of skills as Lewis but he is bigger and much more durable.

James White will most likely be called upon on third down conversion for the time being. While the Patriots limited opponents to low points total for most of last season, it turned into an illusion in the Super Bowl as the whole unit missed assignments, covered and tackled poorly. They wooed in Devon’s twin brother Jason McCourty and Dont’a Hightower, who clearly wasn’t healthy last season, should return as the heart and soul of the defense.

The Bottom Line:
If the shortcomings on defense can be elucidated, the Patriots should again be the most feared squads in the NFL. The Bills, Dolphins and Jets are all projected to finish at the bottom of the AFC Conference and the Patriots do have six games to play against them. Indeed, the road to the playoffs is certainly easier for them than any other teams in the league and being in such an incapacitated division permits them some wiggle room that other teams simply don’t have. At 41, Brady could regress this season but don’t count on it given how stubborn and driven the future Hall-of-Famer is.
