Lost in the hubbub of an epic comeback by the Cubs to advance to the NLCS was a pretty fantastic game played between the Dodgers and Nationals.

With so much on the line, both teams showed they were up for the challenge in a back and forth affair. The lead changed or the teams were tied on six different occasions before LA finally pulled out the 6-5 win.

The top of the lineup produced all of the offence for Washington including seven hits and two walks in 18 at bats. Daniel Murphy also punched in four RBIs in the loss.

Washington got on the board in the first and then Adrian Gonzalez replied in the bottom half with a two run homer. That bodes well for LA as he was hitting just .154 in the series coming into this game.

Murphy tied it up for Washington in the third before LA took over the middle frames with three straight runs and a 5-2 lead after six.

One might argue that on three days’ rest, Clayton Kershaw’s day should have ended right there with an excellent bullpen to go to. But he came out for the seventh and he battled to the point where he got the first two outs, but exited with the bases loaded.

The combo of Pedro Baez and Luis Avilan could not get the job done as a hit by pitch and a single later and the game was tied.

Not to be outdone, LA rallied in their half of the eighth with Chase Utley delivering the knockout single that brought in the eventual winning run.

Now we have a tied series and a bunch of history weighing on the shoulders of both teams.

For LA, with the highest payroll in the league there will always be the pressure to win the World Series. This is their fourth straight year winning the division and they are trying to break a streak of two straight seasons of bowing out in the NLDS.

For the Nationals, they are still looking for their first playoff series win since returning to Washington and first as a franchise since the Expos in 1981. Their loss in the NLCS that year by the way is known as Blue Monday when the team to lost the elimination game to –you guessed it- the Dodgers on a ninth inning homer by Rick Monday.

Furthermore they are managed by Dusty Baker, whose teams have made a habit of losing elimination games. In fact with Tuesday’s loss his teams have now lost eight in a row with three different franchises – Cubs, Reds and Nationals. That’s a MLB record.

But he’ll have a great chance to end the streak with CY Young favorite Max Scherzer on the mound. The ace lost a tight game one 4-3 and he allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. But he went 20-7 with a 2.96 ERA in the regular season and will be fully rested.

That’s more than can be said for Rich Hill who gets the nod for the Dodgers. He comes in on three days rest and he was on the mound for the 5-2 loss in game two. He allowed four runs in 4.1 innings giving up six hits in the process.

The Dodgers have a 5.40 ERA in the series heading into this game as Washington has had success hitting the ball in every single game.

Washington has a 3.86 ERA as LA has had to scratch and claw for their wins, save for the last game.

Bovada has the Nationals favorites at 155-moneyline with the total sitting at 7 at MyBookie Sportsbook.
