Chicago Looks to Reach NLCS at Home vs Washington

NLDS Game 4 Vegas Odds & Aengus Moorehead MLB Picks: Washington Nationals vs Chicago Cubs

Washington Nationals vs. Chicago Cubs

Nationals: 1-2 (0-1 V)
Cubs: 2-1 (1-0 H)
When: 4:00 PM ET, Wednesday, October 11, 2017
Where: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois

The Chicago Cubs are one win away of reaching the NLSC for the third consecutive season and the celebration could start at home as they get ready to resume hostilities against the Washington Nationals with Game 4 of the NLDS set to be broadcasted Wednesday instead of Tuesday afternoon on TBS at 5:38 p.m. ET and live from Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Nationals are on the brink of losing their 4th NLDS in the past six years.

All three Nationals’ starters have been sharp in the series to say the least, yet Washington trails the opportunistic Cubs 2-1. However, the Cubs’ starters are looking like the ones that dominated the postseason last year with Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester and newcomer Jose Quintana all posting quality starts in the series. Now, the Nationals will have to face former Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta on Tuesday. The Cubs took game three 2-1 in a great pitching duel.

The Cubs have also been clutch at times as they were on Monday when they overcame a brilliant performance by Nationals’ starter Max Scherzer who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and just like Stephen Strasburg held the Cubs hitless into the sixth in the opener, the Cubs showed why they are World Champions by showing off their resiliency. After tying the game at one apiece in the 7th chasing Scherzer, the Cubs touched the bullpen for a run in the 8th to complete the late rally.

With Tuesday’s game postponed, the Nationals will stick with RH Tanner Roark (13-11, 4.67 ERA) and he will look for his first postseason win as he takes the mound for the Nationals while RH Jake Arrieta (14-10, 3.53 ERA) attempts to win his third consecutive postseason start as he gets the nod for the Cubs.

Roark didn’t factor in the decision in his lone postseason start last season in which he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 4 1/3 innings in Washington’s 5-2 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLDS. The 31-year old has struggled in his last three appearances on the mound in a sequence in which he went 0-2 with 11 runs allowed on 16 hits in just 12 1/3 innings with the Nationals losing all 3 games. The Illinois native is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 6-career starts against the Cubs.

Arrieta will be making his eighth-career postseason start and he has been decent in his seven prior outings as he compiled a 4-2 record with a 3.64 ERA during that stretch. The 31-year old was limited to an average of 63 pitches in his last 3 starts as he has been nursing a nagging hamstring injury. Arrieta lost his lone start against Washington this season in which he yielded 5 runs in 4 frames back in June. He is 1-2 with a 5.48 ERA in 9-career starts against Washington.

Pitching Change Alert: RH Stephen Strasburg (15-4, 2.52 ERA – 0-1, 0.00 ERA) has been named the starter for Game 4 for the Nationals. Strasburg was brilliant in his outing in the opener as the 29-year old didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the sixth inning. He was outdueled by Kyle Hendricks who threw 7 scoreless innings in Chicago’s 3-0 win last Friday. Strasburg finished the day with 2 runs allowed on three hits in 7 frames. The San Diego native is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 5-career starts against the Cubs.

The result:
It must be quite demoralizing for the Nationals to lose games when their starters were absolutely dominant. Now they have Arrieta to contend with; a pitcher with quite the experience in postseason play. With an extra day to work with, the Nationals do have the luxury to bring in Strasburg if needed but so do the Cubs with Kyle Hendricks waiting in the wings. Look for the Cubs to take Game 4 at home. Cubs 5, Nationals 3.
