The Story
The Carolina Panthers still don’t get the respect they envision they deserve but should they? After becoming the 16th team in NFL history to start with double-digit wins without a loss, the North Carolina dwellers are just the second team in that elite group to be tagged as the underdog (still pending) after capturing ten consecutive victories.

The other team, the 1985 Chicago Bears who, ironically, came hurtling to Texas with a 14-1 record in their last game of the season and you guessed it against those same Cowboys were labelled at a one-point underdog in that encounter. However, according to Pro-Football-Reference, the line for that 1985 game eventually settled on pick-em at kickoff with the Bears resting most of their soldiers. Final result: Bears 44 Dallas 0.

Mind you, Carolina isn’t going 16-0 and since there are only six games left to play, a road game on a short week against a team that is far better than its 3-7 record indicates and has recently gotten back its injured quarterback seems like a opportune time for an upset, yet rest assured that Carolina is well aware of its shortcomings when it comes to credibility and is poised to make some kind of statement on prime time to prove its invulnerability. We shall see.

Dallas has won six of its last nine Thanksgiving games, which fits with the short-week idea. However, the Cowboys are only nine for its last 18 on Turkey Day. Regardless, Tony Romo’s presence has shed some glimmer of hope in the Cowboys’ contingency to flourish in a tormented NFC East division which is clearly up for grabs.

The Cowboy’s winless skid is finally over. Romo delivered immediate results upon his return as he led the Cowboys to a 24-14 win over Miami, their first win since Week 2. The Cowboys improved to 3-0 with Romo as its starting quarterback this season, and 0-7 without him.

Romo’s return has also given the Dallas offense an added dimension through the air. Wide receiver Terrance Williams caught four catches for 79 yards – his highest total since Romo’s last game in Week 2 – with a touchdown. Dez Bryant benefited too, and caught his 50th career touchdown from Romo, now the most by a quarterback-receiver combo in Cowboy history.

Speaking of which, several quarterbacks have more offensive weapons than Cam Newton, but Carolina’s star quarterback has helped make his offense one of the best in football. The Panthers rank third in the NFL with 29.9 points per game, and they’ve been incredibly consistent, scoring at least 27 points in their last eight games.

Newton’s numbers weren’t very impressive at the start of the year, but after 10 games they are more than respectable. Including rushing touchdowns, he has 26 scores on the season and nine interceptions. Newton has registered a passer rating of at least 104.4 in each of his last three games, totaling 760 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and one pick over that span.

After torching the Packers for three touchdowns two weeks ago, and completing 80 percent of his passes against Tennessee last week, Newton raised the passing game to another level against Washington. Newton passed for had a career-high five touchdowns – four in the first half alone.

Rookie receiver Devin Funchess led the way with 64 yards on four catches with a touchdown. After recording just seven catches in the first seven weeks, Funchess now has nine catches and two touchdowns in the last three to add a much-needed weapon for Newton in the receiving game.

The running game and defense – their bread and butter for most of the year – have remained pretty effective, too. Jonathan Stewart is averaging 96.5 rushing yards in his last two games. On the other side, the defense tied a season-high by coming up with five turnovers against Washington. Carolina now leads the league with 25 forced turnovers this season.

That Panthers D will get one of its tougher tests of the season against a Dallas offense that now has Romo back. But the Carolina secondary, led by breakout star Josh Norman, has the corners to silence dangerous Cowboys receiving corps. Meanwhile, the increasingly well-rounded Panthers offense has a chance to do some serious damage against a pretty subpar Dallas D.

Bovada has the Panthers listed as 1- point favorites and the game's total is sitting at 45½ according to MyBookie.ag

The result:
The Panthers are for real and should not be discounted as a work in progress. They have the weapons on both sides of the game to dismantle any team crossing their paths. Experience is an issue, grant it, but Carolina has proven its worth as an elite squad which is not afraid of the bright lights. Even with Romo at the helm looking like the Messiah in search of the promise land, one man cannot do it all and the Cowboys are still fragile within their own spirits. Take Carolina outright and the over 45½.
