You know things aren’t going well when you’re losing to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers, who have the second worst record in the league and are just 4-23 since January 5th snapped an eight game skid with a 107-101 home victory over the Nets.
In that game, the rookie and #2 overall pick D’Angelo Russell had his best game as a professional with 39 points and eight 3-pointers. It was his third straight game with more than 22 points in what has been an uneven entry season into the league.
The Lakers led from start to finish, gave up their fewest points in the past seven games and gave the world a glimpse of what the team may become as soon as next year when Kobe’s contract comes off the books and the team has real money to spend on free agents.
The Nets on the other hand are gearing up for a much longer rebuild as they recently replaced their GM, coach and let one of their best players Joe Johnson walk out the door.
In Brook Lopez (20.6 PPG, 8.2 RPG) and Thaddeus Young (15.0 PPG 9.2 RPG), they have a couple of good pieces still young enough to build around, but where this franchise goes from here is anyone’s guess. The drop off after those two and Jarrett Jack (12.8 PPG- out for the season) is significant with a collection of players all averaging less than 10PPG. That means a team that has already had trouble scoring all season is going to find things even harder from here on out.
The Nets are 7-21 over the past couple months of play, but they have racked up a few wins lately as they are 4-5 in their last nine. That includes a 105-104 home win over the Nuggets on Feb. 8th.
In that game the scoring was well spread throughout the lineup with six players netting between ten and 20 points, with the winning shot coming off the hands of Johnson and a game ending three pointer.
The Nuggets have also been struggling most of the season as they are in the middle of a patient rebuild. They have a collection of super young talent such as 19 year old rookie Emmanuel Mudiay (11.3 PPG 5.8 APG) and players near the start of their prime such as Danilo Gallinari (19.5 PPG) and Kenneth Faried (12.5 PPG 8.7 RPG), but there remains a large enough talent gap, that this is another disappointing season.
After starting out a respectable 11-14, they are just 13-23 since then which includes a 3-6 record in recent games. They are also dealing with an ankle injury to Gallinari and are considering shutting him down for the season.
They were 117-107 winners over the Lakers last time out. D.J. Augustin who’s spent most of this season as a bench player came on strong in the fourth scoring 22 of his 26 points and the Nuggets pulled away from what was a very close game.
Overall the Nets are 29th in scoring averaging 97.0PPG and 20th in allowing 103.6 PPG.
The Nuggets are tied for 19th in scoring at 101.0 PPG and 21st in points allowed at 104.1 PPG.
