The University of South Carolina has had one Heisman winner in school history: Running back George Rogers in 1980. Junior tailback Marcus Lattimore is a threat to join Rogers in that exclusive club this year. Lattimore, the nation’s top freshman back two seasons ago and a preseason Heisman candidate last year, saw his 2011 season come to an early end when he tore ligaments Injure in the second half of South Carolina's 14-10 victory at Mississippi State in the Gamecocks’ seventh game of the season on Oct. 15. Lattimore finished with 818 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on 163 carries along with 19 receptions for 182 yards and a score. He ranked among the SEC and national leaders in rushing at 116.9 yards per game, scoring at 9.4 points per game, and in all-purpose yards per game at 142.9, but did not play in enough games to qualify for the national rankings. Lattimore had surgery a month after his injury and has been working vigorously since. He will be ready for fall camp.
In 2010, Lattimore helped South Carolina win the SEC Eastern Division and make its first appearance in the league's title game. He finished with 1,197 yards and 17 touchdowns to win SEC Freshman of the Year honors. After just two seasons, he ranks 14th in school history with 2,015 rushing yards and is tied for third with 27 rushing touchdowns.
Working against Lattimore in the Heisman race is that only one running back has won the award this century: Alabama’s Mark Ingram in 2009. Coming off a school-record 11-win campaign, the Gamecocks will open their season Aug. 30 at Vanderbilt.
