The Miami Marlins head into Sunday’s rubber game against the Cardinals in St. Louis reeling from some bad news: All-Star right fielder Giancarlo Stanton reinjured his knee in Saturday’s 3-2 loss and will undergo surgery that will keep him out 4-to-6 weeks.
The St. Louis Cardinals also are without one of their mainstays, All-Star catcher Yadier Molina. He’s in Puerto Rico to attend the funeral of his wife’s grandfather. With Molina on the bereavement list, backup Tony Cruz delivered a two-run triple for the go-ahead runs Saturday.
St. Louis is 5-4 on its season-high 10-game homestand that concludes Sunday. Miami has won seven of 10 despite Saturday’s loss.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Anibal Sanchez (4-6, 4.19 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Joe Kelly (1-1, 3.29)
Sanchez beat the Cardinals on June 27, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked two. But in two of his last three starts, he has exited early after being hit hard. For the season, batters are hitting .253 against Sanchez. He’s 2-2 with a 3.31 ERA in five career starts against St. Louis.
The rookie Kelly, making his sixth start, has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any outing. When he faced the Marlins in that June 27 matchup, he gave up two runs on five hits in six innings. Batters are hitting .297 against Kelly, whose ability to strand runners has helped him overcome an ugly 1.50 WHIP.
1. Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman, who had knee surgery in May, could go on a minor-league rehab assignment as early as next weekend.
2. At 41-43, the much-hyped Marlins will enter the All-Star Break below .500.
3. Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday has a 10-game hitting streak. He has two homers, four doubles and nine RBIs in that span.
