MLB Baseball Picks & Tips: San Diego Padres vs Colorado Rockies
Monday, April 16, 2012
by Mike Stewart
After being swept in three games by the Dodgers, the San Diego Padres are eager to leave Dodger Stadium behind.
San Diego, which has lost nine straight at Dodger Stadium, owns the worst record in the majors at 2-8 heading into a three-game series at Colorado Rockies.
In addition to their offensive struggles, the Padres have committed 13 errors through 10 games. Colorado is 4-5 after failing to complete a three-game sweep of Arizona on Sunday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Cory Luebke (0-1, 5.40 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jeremy Guthrie (1-0, 7.84 ERA)
The Rockies made their first roster move of the season Sunday, sending Jordan Pacheco to Triple-A Colorado Springs so he can play regularly at third base. Chris Nelson is likely to get most of the starts at third until Pacheco returns. Colorado also has top prospect Nolan Arenado playing third for Double-A Tulsa, and he could be ready in just a few months.
Luebke is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 10 games (four starts) against Colorado, and he actually has a better ERA on the road (2.87) than he does at Petco Park (4.01) for his career. Troy Tulowitzki is 3-for-10 with two home runs against Luebke, who has struck out 11 over his first 10 innings this season.
Acquired in a trade with Baltimore during the offseason, Guthrie had a rough introduction to Coors Field last Wednesday, giving up six runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings against the Giants. In his only career start against San Diego, Guthrie went eight innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out nine.
1. The Padres’ 2-8 start is tied for second-worst in franchise history (1974, 1987), but this is the first time they’ve been seven games out of first place after 10 games.
2. Carlos Gonzalez missed the Rockies’ last two games with a sore throat, but he’s expected to be available Monday.
3. Padres catcher Nick Hundley snapped an 0-for-21 start with a single and two walks Sunday.
