With their poster boys nursing injuries, ace CC Sabathia came up big.
The New York Yankees left-hander struck out 10 Tuesday, throwing 128 pitches and giving up two runs six innings of work versus the Boston Red Sox, leading them to a 5-2 win. Sabathia had an 0-4 record with a 7.20 ERA versus Boston coming into the opening of a three-game series. With the win the Yankees are just a half-game back.
"It’s always a big game when you’re playing the team you’re chasing," Sabathia said. "Of course, when you guys won’t stop talking about it."
Yankees play Boston on Wednesday and Thursday to close out the crucial series.

Betting Analysis: Despite Derek Jeter just returning from knee issues and Alex Rodriguez not scheduled to return until Friday the Yankees were still able to capture a huge win versus it’s AL East rival. Unfortunately, Wednesday’s contest puts Phil Hughes (4-4, 6.46 ERA) up against ace Josh Beckett (11-5, 2.43 ERA). Hits and homeruns will be much harder to come by while Hughes could easily give up 5-6 runs in an inning. The total for this game has been listed at 9 while the Yankees are +150 underdogs, it appears oddsmakers expect a high scoring game where the Red Sox squeak by.
Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson and second baseman Robinson Cano will again have to put the team on their backs to beat the Red Sox and take an AL East lead.
