Liev Jackson SNF Free ATS Predictions: The Game of the Week features Eagles vs. Panthers

Panthers: 5-0 SU,4-1 ATS

This game is a reminder of how quickly things can change over the course of a 16 game season. The media have a job to do every week and the public does too whether that be the casual fan, or someone playing fantasy or betting on the game. We rise and fall with the waves of the action, but if we are to pay attention it is only when the calendar turns to November that the true stories of the season start to play themselves out.

Nowhere is that more evident than with what’s happening in Philadelphia. Chip Kelly decided to remake his roster in unconventional ways. He replaced his starting QB, star RB and #1 WR and key components of his offensive line in one off season after finishing 10-6 for the second consecutive year.

They dominated in preseason and then fell flat on their faces when the games really started to count. The pressure mounted, at least from the outside looking in. But one would have to think the coaching staff and the players, you know, the ones who actually comprise the team knew better and had an eye towards the bigger picture.

They definitely caught a break or two with the major injuries and suspensions to Dallas who were once 2-0 (i.e. Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Randy Gregory, Greg Hardy etc.) but that is the reality of the NFL. And now they find themselves winners of 2 straight (and 3 out of 4), including a blowout of the Giants last week and atop their (very mediocre) division.

The much maligned offence has put up 63 points in those two games and the defence hasn’t allowed more than 20 points in a game since week 1. Yep, it’s fair to say the Eagles are rounding into form and look poised to go on a run.

And how about the Panthers? Here’s a team that has been the epitome of mediocre (minus one season) in the 5 years Ron Rivera has been their coach. They lost their budding star WR Kelvin Benjamin in the preseason and were pretty much an afterthought heading into the season. No one took them too seriously even as they raced out to a 4-0 record against a bunch of mediocre teams. But then last week they marched into Seattle and their ferocious defence and screaming fans. The Panthers launched a memorable 4th quarter comeback, avenged their playoff loss last season and remain an undefeated team atop their division. The NFC South, once thought to be among the weakest divisions in the NFL features might be in the middle of rewriting that script.

So these two very intriguing teams face off in Carolina with a lot to prove. Philly is the 7th stingiest D in the league (18.3 Pts per game) and Carolina is 8th (18.8). Carolina is 6th in avg points scored (27) and Philly 10th (24 per game) and on the rise.

Each team has one starting linebacker that’s been ruled out (Kiko Alonso for Philly and Sha’Quille Thompson for Carolina) and that’s about it.

The Bottom Line: Count me as among the group who feels that as Carolina enters the teeth of their schedule, the losses will start to come, but this is still a well-coached and talented team. It is always tough to bounce back with the same level of emotion and passion after a game like they played in Seattle. The Pick: Eagles 30-21.
