Gennady Golvkin and Saul Alvarez will Square Off for the Middleweight Crown Saturday

Liev Jackson Boxing Preview, Las Vegas Odds & Predictions on GGG Golvkin vs Canelo Alvarez

86-1-1. That is the combined record between the two best middleweight boxers in the world when Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (37-0) and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (49-1-1) get set to dual this Saturday for the undisputed Middleweight crown.

Mayweather vs. McGregor might have hogged the headlines this summer, but given where these champion boxers are in their respective careers, this match has all the promise to be one of the best fights in recent times.

GGG is the current champ after Canelo vacated his crown in May 2016, refusing to fight the heavy hitter at the time. But he promised he would fight the veteran on his own terms, and this fight is the culmination of that journey.

Golvkin truly is the champion of the division at this point, crushing all comers to this point. An astounding 33 of his 37 fights have ended in knockouts and he has won 89% of every round he’s ever boxed. He has fought in 19 consecutive world title fights and of course has won them all and only one opponent, Danny Jacobs made it to the final bell. His power is truly feared by his peers as evidenced by the fact that during the seven years he’s held one of the championship belts there have been 22 other boxers who have held one of the others and only three have dared to step in the ring with him.

Saul Alvarez in the meanwhile has just one loss to his name and it was to Gennady Golvkin when he was just 23 years old. In the four years that have passed he’s refined his game and demolished all comers. He seems to be settling in well to his prime, getting himself into perfect mental and physical shape for this opportunity. It says something of his maturity that he would prefer to vacate his belt last year and take all the criticism that would come with it in order to improve his skills for this fight one year later. His last fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. which he dominated with such incredible boxing skills shows that he is ready for this opportunity.

GGG might have only had the one fighter make it the distance, but it happens to have come in his last fight which took place in March. He did not look sharp, and perhaps it’s a matter of fighting an inferior opponent, he lacked motivation or maybe at 35, age is starting to catch up with him.

The winner of this fight is going to have to show all their mettle to be a master technician, balancing aggression with safety. Leaning in to take their shots and then countering when opportunities present themselves.

GGG has fought as a middleweight his entire career, Canelo has shifted between middle, welter and light middle often and comfortably. He is said to be able to add 20 pounds of weight between weigh in and that first bell, and that might be a big difference maker here.

So who wins? Here’s our picks on props and a winner:

Winner:
GGG is -155 and Canelo is +125. Both fighters are battle tested and Canelo eight years younger and likely heavier has both aspects working in his favor. But GGG is a powerhouse and I think he’ll find the way. The Pick: GGG -155

Method of Victory:
GGG by decision +275. I think GGG wins, but it will be a true fight of the century and that means it goes the distance. The Pick: GGG by decision +275
