Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy: Ducks' DeAnthony Thomas

Even with Heisman contender LaMichael James on the team last year, there’s no question that the most electric player on the Oregon Ducks in 2011 was freshman running back/return man DeAnthony Thomas. With James (who was 10th in the Heisman voting a year ago) now in the NFL, the Ducks should be Thomas’ team and he is 20/1 on Bovada Sportsbook’s Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.

If Thomas isn’t the fastest player in college football, he’s on the short list. He was a freshman All-American, the Pac-12 co-offensive freshman of the year and an All-Pac-12 first-team kick returner in 2011. Thomas ranked 11th nationally in all-purpose yards (147.8 yards per game) and was the only player in the nation with 400 or more yards rushing, receiving and kick returning. Thomas was the Ducks’ second-leading receiver with 46 receptions for 605 yards and nine touchdowns and third-leading rusher with 608 yards on 55 carries with seven scores.

Thomas gave a glimpse of what to expect this season when he had a team-high 314 all-purpose yards in the Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin. Thomas only carried the ball twice as a runner and scored on runs of 91 and 64 yards, along with four catches for 34 yards, to lead the Ducks to their first Rose Bowl win since 1917.

Working in Thomas’ favor is that the Ducks will again have arguably the nation’s most explosive offense and they may run more this season because quarterback Darron Thomas surprisingly declared for the NFL draft and then wasn’t even taken. However, Thomas will certainly lose touches to Kenjon Barner, who rushed for 939 yards and 11 scores on 152 carries. There are only so many footballs to go around.

Oregon, which has never had a Heisman winner, opens its season Sept. 1 vs. Arkansas State.
