One game does not a series make. And both Houston and San Antonio realize this after the surprise blowout the Rockets handed out to the Spurs.

In game one it was as if Houston could do no wrong in their 126-99 victory. The 27-point loss margin was the worst in Spurs playoff history for a game one. The 22-three pointers made on 50 attempts were both club records for most made and allowed.

But Houston was able to make that many shots, because they were also incredibly successful in close and from mid-range. They led by 30 points in the first half and as many as 39 points in the third quarter. James Harden’s numbers were a very reasonable 31 minutes as he put up 20 points and 14 rebounds. Trevor Ariza had 23 and Clint Capela had 20 in 25 minutes and three other players also scored in double digits.

Meanwhile if you’re not Kawhi Leonard and you’re a Spurs player you may want to burn the video of this game. He led the Spurs with 21 points and no one else had more than 11. LaMarcus Aldridge for one had just four points and the Sours were -36 with him on the floor. He could not keep up with the speed and the tactics that Houston threw at his team.

Overall the Spurs shot just 36.9% and 31% from long range compared to 46% and 44% for Houston.

The Rockets were off for four days after disposing of Oklahoma City in five games. It also gave Harden and his balky ankle time to rest.

San Antonio had a much tougher time of things, beating the Grizzlies in six. Memphis fought back in games three and four on their home court, but they could not keep up with the Spurs in game five and six.

But with only two days off in between series, the Spurs did not make the necessary adjustments for an entirely different Rockets team.

Both teams will look to put game one behind them for entirely different reasons. In Houston’s case, success can breed complacency. They don’t want their heads to swell.

For San Antonio, the loss should fuel a much sharper game two performance, but they have to make sure that Houston’s plethora of shooters don’t get in their collective heads.

BetOnline Sportsbook has the Spurs listed as 5½-point favorites and the game's total is sitting at 215 according to MyBookie.ag

The Bottom Line: The Spurs are -5 favorites to take game two. That’s because coach Gregg Popovich is a master at getting his team ready to play after a loss, never mind one as big as this one. The Spurs were a top-three defensive team all year and should have more success on that end. Houston has struggled on defense this season, so the expectation is San Antonio will shoot closer to 45-50% going forward and that should equal 108-112. points. While I like this theory, I think Houston will continue to keep the score close. The Pick: San Antonio 111-108.
