The 5-4 Buffalo Bills have decided to make a change at quarterback this week, sitting the incumbent Tyrod Taylor for rookie 5th round pick Nathan Peterman. On the surface it certainly appears a curious choice for a team with a winning record who hasn’t made the playoffs in 17 years.

The reasoning is that even if Taylor’s completed 64.2% of his passes to go along with 10TDs and 3 INTs, he is slow to get rid of the ball. As such, when the running game and LeSean McCoy is slowed, the offense can’t recover. That was certainly the case in last week’s 47-10 home loss to the Saints so now new management wants to see what they have with the rookie as they try to find a long-term answer at QB.

He played the fourth quarter last week when the game was already well out of hand and looked assertive against the soft zone that he faced, but of course take that with a grain of salt.

The Chargers are 3-6 but should be a good opening test what with the defensive tandem of Joey Bosa (9.5 sacks) and Melvin Ingram (8.5 sacks) to contend with. This team is the king of heart breaking losses- for the second year in a row.

Four of their defeats have been by three points or less. The offense was expected to be better under first year coach Anthony Lynn and the return of a healthier receiver corps to throw to, but they’ve averaged just 17 PPG the last four games. They’re 2-2 over that stretch allowing 14.3 PPG.
