After knocking heavily favored Russia right out of Euro 2012 with a stunning upset, Greece will be looking for a second straight shocker against the Las Vegas Euro 2012 Soccer Odds when it faces powerful Germany in the second quarter-final on Friday afternoon (2:45 pm Eastern) in Gdansk, Poland.
Despite losing 2-1 to Group A winners the Czech Republic, Greece played to a 1-1 draw with co-host Poland and then shocked the Russians with a 1-0 victory on a stoppage-time goal late in the first half by Giorgos Karagounis to advance to the knockout stage as the Group A runner-up. Karagounis, however, was issued his second yellow card of the tournament later in the match and will consequently miss Friday’s against Germany, as will the twice-booked Jose Holebas.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos was cautioned twice against the Czechs (and missed the draw with Poland), while Vasilis Torosidis, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Dimitrios Salpingidis have also been shown the yellow. Salpingidis and Theofanis Gekas are the other goal-scorers to date for Greece.
Germany has looked increasingly strong after opening with a pedestrian 1-0 victory over Portugal, after which the 11/5 Odds to win Euro 2012 posted similar 2-1 victories on the Las Vegas Euro 2012 Soccer Odds over the Netherlands and Denmark.
Mario Gomez scored the first three goals of the tournament for Germany, before Lukas Podolski and Lars Bender struck in the win over Denmark. Holger Badstuber was cautioned in the opener, while Jerome Boateng was booked as well against Portugal and his second booking in the win over Holland caused him to miss the third victory over Denmark.
