One of the best offenses in the country will take on one of the top defenses when Oklahoma Sooners and Georgia Bulldogs clash in the Rose Bowl on January 1st.

It can be argued that no one played better than the Sooners down the stretch, with one of if not the toughest slates in the country once the calendar hit November. They won their last eight games and three of their last six games came against teams ranked in the top-11 in the country. They beat their in-state rivals Oklahoma State in a shootout, 62-52. The following week they beat then #6 TCU 38-20. And to prove it was no fluke, they beat TCU again, 41-17 in the Big-12 championship game.

QB Baker Mayfield looked every bit like the runaway Heisman Trophy winner that he’s sure to be. He threw 18 TDs and just 2 INTs in five November games. The only team from a major conference to average more points this season was Oklahoma State.

This is coach Lincoln Riley’s first year behind the bench, but he’s been Mayfield’s offensive coordinator for the past several years, and this year he simply opened up the playbook for his quarterback. The defense is a weak link, but they tightened up as well down the stretch, allowing 17.8 PPG in their last four games and three of their four opponents were quality opponents.

Georgia has one of the best defenses in the country and they are lead by the Butkus winner, awarded annually to the nation’s best linebacker. That honor went to Roquan Smith. Combined with the mid-field of Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy, this is a team with enough speed and talent to give Mayfield a solid run for his money.

This team is coached by ex-Alabama and Nick Saban assistant Kirby Smart, and he’s been very successful at implementing his alma mater’s system at Georgia.

They may have saved their best for last in the regular season, beating an Auburn team in the SEC championship 28-7 which had just beaten Alabama the week prior.

They will need their excellent running game which averaged 263.4 YPG to get going in order to help keep the ball out of Mayfield’s hands.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Oklahoma Sooners Betting Trends & Predictions

Georgia Bulldogs:
Under is 6-2 in Georgia last 8 neutral site games
Georgia are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games overall
Under is 19-8 in Georgia last 27 games on grass

Oklahoma Sooners:
Under is 7-1 in Oklahoma last 8 vs. SEC
Under is 7-1 in Oklahoma last 8 neutral site games
Oklahoma are 17-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record

The Bottom Line:
The Georgia are -2 favorites in the early betting with an over/under of 60. It is tough to go against Mayfield the way he has been leading his team to victory. But if ever there was a team to do it, it would be Georgia. Still, Mayfield is the best player in college football this year and he’s risen to the challenge each time. That has me leaning towards Oklahoma and the over in the early going. The Pick: Oklahoma 35-28.
