The New York Giants were a playoff team under first year coach Ben McAdoo and the return of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. It’s a team that bet heavy in free agency to shore up their defense with the additions of Olivier Vernon and Damon Harrison up front to pair with stalwart Jason Pierre-Paul. And then Janoris Jenkins was added to secondary along with first round pick Eli Apple.

Little did they know, they would hit homeruns with each of those choices as the defense was one of the most improved units in the league. That doesn’t even account for the leap made by SS Landon Collins who emerged in his second year as one of the best playmakers in the league.

Now they added WR Brandon Marshall (Jets) as a free agent in the offseason to complement WR Odell Beckham Jr.. If Marshall has anything left in the tank, this team could certainly be one of the best in the NFC this year.

Dallas finished last year with the best record in the NFC at 13-3 and pushed the Packers to the wall, before the wizardry of Aaron Rodgers finally exposed their weak defense. That secondary has been revamped as they let all their veterans go in free agency, preferring to rebuild through the draft. They picked three DBs to go along with the free agent signing of Nolan Carroll II and also have returning veterans Orlando Scandrick and Byron Jones.

Jaylon Smith should make a big impact at middle linebacker after he missed all of his rookie year with a devastating knee injury, pairing him with Sean Lee, one of the best in the league. But it could take time to get up to speed since he’s hasn’t played in a meaningful game in 20 months. Taco Charlton was picked in the first round to help bring pressure up front and they’ll need it for a weak line that is also missing David Irving due to suspension.

The real question mark for Dallas though is what will Ezekiel Elliott bring to the offense this week in what could be his last game before starting to serve a six-game suspension. How well he’s able to shut out the legal drama and fallout of his off-field behavior will go a long in determining the outcome of this game. Dak Prescott has the look of a QB that can build off his historic rookie season and Dez Bryant appears healthy for the first time in two years. Put it all together behind what should still be one of the best offensive lines in the league and you have the offense should be able to play at an elite level- at least for one game.

Dallas lost its last outing, a 34-31 result against the Packers on January 15. The Cowboys failed to cover in that game as a -5-point favorite, while the 65 combined points took the game OVER the total.

New York was a 38-13 loser in its last match on the road against the Packers. They failed to cover the +5-point spread as underdogs, while the total score of 51 sent OVER bettors to the payout window.

New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys Betting Odds & Trends

NY Giants:
Team record: 11-6 SU,8-7-2 ATS
NY Giants is 8-4 ATS in its last 12 games
NY Giants is 9-3 SU in its last 12 games
The total has gone UNDER in 7 of NY Giants's last 9 games

Dallas:
Team record: 13-4 SU,10-6-1 ATS
Dallas is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games
Dallas is 13-3 SU in its last 16 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Dallas's last 6 games

Next up:
New York home to Detroit Monday, September 18
Dallas at Denver Sunday, September 17

The result:
The Cowboys are -4½ favorites in part because Beckham is 50-50 to play and same goes for Apple. Those losses would weaken the Giants tremendously, but they did have Prescott’s number last year, beating him twice. I think for one week we’ll see a return of that dominant Dallas team that surprised last year. The Pick: Cowboys 28-20.
