The Chicago Cubs will have to wait another night to see if they can clinch the NL Central and that day could be Wednesday as they get ready to resume hostilities in the third contest of their four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals with the showdown set be staged at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

The Cubs needed to win their Tuesday night affair against the Cardinals or a loss by the Milwaukee Brewers but neither events occurred. They made it interesting though in their 8-7 loss on Tuesday by scoring four runs in the 8th inning and putting two men on base in the ninth but could not convert for the late comeback.

Cubs ace Jake Arrieta lasted only three innings with three runs allowed on six hits for his tenth loss on the season. The Cardinals snapped a six-game losing streak against the Cubs and won for just the second time in their last ten games against their division rivals. St. Louis is 2.5 games back of the Rockies for the second wild-card spot.

RH John Lackey (11-11, 4.67 ERA) will look to nab his second win in September as he takes the mound for the Cubs while RH Michael Wacha (12-8, 4.00 ERA) gets the call in the third game of series for the Cardinals.

Lackey will have revenge on his mind when he takes the mound on Wednesday. The 38-year old was ejected for arguing for what seemed a strike when he last pitched to the Cardinals back on September 15. Lackey had allowed two runs on three hits and a homerun in 4 2/3 innings in an 8-2 Chicago win. Thus far this season, Lackey is 1-0 with a 3.57 ERA in 3 starts against the Cardinals. In all, the Texan is 2-1 with a 2.64 ERA in 7-career starts against St. Louis.

Wacha didn’t factor in the decision in his last start in which he allowed two runs on three hits in five innings in a 4-3 St. Louis win back on Friday. The 26-year old struggled mightily against the Cubs this season compiling a 0-2 dossier along with a hefty 7.88 ERA in three starts. The Iowa City native is 4-6 with a 4.30 ERA in thirteen-career starts against the Cubs.

Mybookie Sportsbook has the Cardinals favorites at 110-moneyline with the total sitting at 9.
