NY Yankees Look to Keep Winning Ways Against Cardinals
Cardinals: 3-6 (1-2 V)
Yankees: 5-4 (3-0 H)
When: 7:05 PM ET, Friday, April 14, 2017
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
TV: MLB Network, FSN Midwest, YES
The red-hot New York Yankees will attempt to extend their winning form as they get ready to meet the St. Louis Cardinals in an interleague showdown set to be staged at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. This will be the preamble of a three-game series between the two storied franchises. The Cardinals avoided a sweep at the hands of Washington on Wednesday while the Yanks completed theirs over division rivals Tampa bay on Thursday.
The two clubs will meet for the first time since 2014 with New York winning the set 2-1 in St. Louis. The Cards got off to a rocky start this season losing six of seven before escaping a broom job in Washington. In their three previous tilts, the pitching staff were all out of sorts as they allowed 30 runs on 42 hits combined but were able to beat Max Scherzer in the finale of their series against the Nationals.
So far this season, the Cardinals’ pitching core is 26th in the league in ERA which is atypical from a team with a usually reliable rotation. Ironically, pitching was the Yankee’s Achilles Heel coming into this season but they have done a relatively stable job sitting in 9th place in the Majors with a 3.57 ERA so far this season. They don’t get too many quality starts but their bullpen have been up to the task.
RH Michael Wacha (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will be called upon to start for the Cardinals while RH Masahiro Tanaka (0-1, 11.74 ERA) will look to improve on a bitter start for the Yankees in the opener.
Wacha has proven to be the ace and most reliable pitcher of the Cardinals with Adam Wainwright losing his ways and Mike Leake still unproven in this league. Wacha demonstrated his worth in his last outing when he limited Cincinnati to a run on 3 hits with six strikeouts on 6 inning of work in a 10-4 win back on April 8. When healthy, the 25-year old is some kind of pitcher. Wacha faced the Yankees only once in his career and ended up with a no-decision.
Tanaka has had a rough start this season for his club but improved on a catastrophic opener when he allowed 7 runs on 8 hits in just 2 2/3 inning against Tampa Bay back on April 2. He fared a tad better in his next outing but still no cigar as he gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings in a no-decision against Baltimore. The Yankees ended up losing 5-4 in that one. The 28-year-old will be making his first career start against the Cardinals.
