Basketball Las Vegas Odds and Picks: UAB Blazers at Creighton Bluejays

The Creighton Bluejays continues its season-opening homestand when they host UAB Blazers on Wednesday. The Bluejays are coming off a season-opening 71-51 victory over Sun Belt Conference favorite North Texas while UAB, led by first-year coach and Roy Williams disciple Jerod Haase, pounded Young Harris College 105-59 in its first game.

Junior forward and consensus All-American Doug McDermott looks to have picked up right where he left off the past two seasons as he scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the No. 13 Bluejays, who won 70-60 at UAB last year.

UAB Blazers (1-0): Haase spent the previous 13 seasons under Roy Williams at Kansas and North Carolina and inherits a Blazers team that returns three starters from last year's 15-16 team. In the opener, six Blazers scored in double digits. Jordan Swing and Robert Williams paced the attack with 17 points apiece as UAB shot 54 percent from the field and made 11 three-pointers. The 105 points scored were the most by the Blazers since 2004.

Creighton Bluejays (1-0): Besides McDermott, senior center Gregory Echenique anchors the frontcourt. Echenique averaged 9.7 points and 7.3 rebounds to go along with 1.6 blocks last year. McDermott, the nation's leading returning scorer, has scored in double figures in 37 straight games, the second-longest streak in school history. The Bluejays have won 38 straight non-conference home games dating back to a 2007 loss to Drexel and are 50-11 in November since the 1998-99 season. Creighton has won 20 or more games in 13 of the last 14 seasons.

1. McDermott was the first Creighton player since 20001-02 to record a double-double in a season opener when current Atlanta Hawks guard Kyle Korver pulled off the feat.

2. Creighton ranked sixth in the nation last year in attendance averaging 16,665. That is not good news for UAB which has lost its last seven games when it has played in front of a crowd of 10,000 or larger.

3. UAB is one of six teams in all of Division I with no freshmen on its roster.

NBA Basketball Prediction: Creighton 81, UAB 62.
