The recently crowned NL Central Champion Chicago Cubs will probably take a breather over the weekend as they have nothing to gain for postseason perks as they prepare to meet the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game series with the opener set to be staged Friday night at the famed Wrigley Field in Chicago.

The Cubs, who claimed the NL Central title on Wednesday, are already set to meet the Washington Nationals in the divisional playoffs set to take place in the nation’s capital next Friday. The Cubs rested most of their starters in a 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Thursday but most are expected back for the opener versus the Reds.

Cubs’ starter Kyle Hendricks threw five scoreless innings with just four hits allowed and a season-high nine strikeouts and would seem to be the logical choice to start the opener in the NLDS next week. The Cubs have won ten of their sixteen contests against the Reds thus far this season including 5 of 7 at Wrigley Field.

RH Robert Stephenson (5-6, 4.86 ERA) will look for his 3rd straight quality start as he takes the mound for the Reds while LH Jose Quintana (11-11, 4.06 ERA) attempts to replicate his gem from his last start as he gets the nod for the Cubs.

Stephenson has performed relatively well in his last seven starts after a stint in the bullpen. The 24-year old compiled a 5-2 record with a 2.87 ERA during that stretch. In his last outing, Stephenson allowed a couple of runs across five hits with a homerun in six innings in a loss against the Boston Red Sox back on Saturday. In all, the California native is 0-2 with a hefty 6.08 ERA in 2-career starts against the Cubs.

Quintana has been lights out in the month of September after going 2-0 with just five runs allowed in 27 2/3 innings with 31 strikeouts which amounts to a 1.63 ERA in 4 starts. The 28-year old was sensational in his last outing in which he threw a three-hit shutout while fanning a season-high ten batters against Milwaukee last Sunday. The Columbia native won his lone career start against the Reds back on August 14.

Mybookie Sportsbook has the Cubs favorites at 185-moneyline with the total sitting at 7.
