Auto Racing Betting Preview & Liev Jackson Predictions: NASCAR Heads to Phoenix for the Can-Am 500

The second to last race of the year and last of the final-eight is this weekend. Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick won the first two races in this round and Martin Truex Jr. has already accumulated enough points to punch their tickets to the final in Homestead next weekend.

That means there is one spot left among the remaining five drivers.

Here’s how the points standings is looking right now:

  • Brad Keselowski (4111 points).
  • Denny Hamlin (19 points behind).
  • Ryan Blaney (22 points behind).
  • Chase Elliott (49 points behind).
  • Jimmie Johnson (51 points behind).

A win by any of those drivers will earn the final spot.

None of these drivers have won this race in the last six events on this track, so they’ll all have that extra mental challenge to conquer.

Kevin Harvick (+400) might be the second favorite according to the odds, but he’s won three of the last six races here and eight overall. The fact that he won last week, may convince him to ease into the back of the pack and prepare himself for next week. On the other hand, he can be aggressive without fear of racing in the finals.

Kyle Busch (+250) is the odds-on favorite, but he too has clinched his spot for next week. He’s finished top-five here in each of his last four races here, but his only win on this track was back in 2005. He’s already won three of the eight races in the playoffs.

Denny Hamlin (+500) is 19 points out of a playoff spot. Without a win he’ll need to finish top-five and hope Keselowski gets into trouble so he finishes out of the top-25. He’s heating up with four top-five results in the playoffs and is a previous winner on this track.

Chase Elliott (+1200) is 49 points off the pace and will need to pick up his first career win in order to advance. He finished second in three of the first four playoff races and has had some success on 1-mile tracks in his short career. In 11 races he’s finished top-five four times and his 10.1 average finish is tied for third best.

Jimmie Johnson (+1400) is getting long odds and he’s 51 points behind Keselowski for the last spot. He’s the defending NASCAR champ and needs a win in order to defend his championship. He’s also a four-time winner on this track, but has only finished top-10 twice in the last six races.

The Picks:

Favorite #1: Kevin Harvick.

Favorite #2: Denny Hamlin.
