Alabama Quarterback AJ McCarron Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy

In what surprise many people, the storied University of Alabama has had just once Heisman Trophy winner in history: running back Mark Ingram. This is a school that produced Joe Namath and he couldn’t win college football’s top award. Could A.J. McCarron do what Namath couldn’t? McCarron wasn’t even a lock to start last season for Alabama but beat out Philip Sims for the job and started all 13 games in leading the Tide to the national championship. In that BCS title game vs. LSU, McCarron went 23-for-34 for 234 yards with no turnovers to win offensive MVP honors in the game.

By comparison, McCarron struggled in the regular-season loss to LSU, going 16-for-28 for 199 yards with a pick. He finished the season 219 of 328 (66.8 percent) for 2,634 yards, 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions to finish second in the SEC in passing efficiency. McCarron went 152 passes in one stretch without a pick, the third-longest streak in school history.

Last year, Alabama running back Trent Richardson was one of five Heisman Trophy finalists and he ended up third. Richardson opted to forgo his final year of eligibility to prepare for the NFL draft. Thus the Tide could be more of a passing team this season, which should boost McCarron’s numbers. Coach Nick Saban wants to air it out a little more and McCarron will have one of the nation’s top offensive lines to protect him.

If Bama is again in the title hunt, McCarron could well be in the Heisman hunt – just ask Richardson and Ingram (the Tide won it all that year too). Alabama opens the 2012 season with a huge game Sept. 1 against Michigan and its Heisman contender, QB Denard Robinson.
