Alabama poised to Begin NCAA Campaign as Tops in College Football

Aengus Moorehead 2017-18 NCAA College Football Betting Preview

The 2017 college football season is only two months away with the first week of the season set to begin Saturday August 26 and while the Top-25 poll is still hasn’t come to fruition, most pundits have a pretty basic idea which program will qualify as College Football’s elite. The usual suspects like Alabama (+275), Ohio State (+600) and Clemson (+2500) to name a few always seem to find their niche among the early favorites to capture the top spot and this year is no different.

National Champions Clemson Tigers may suffer the biggest drop to start the new season with the loss of major talents jumping ship to shine in the glory of the NFL with QB Deshaun Watson and WR Mike Williams both taken in the first round of the NFL draft this spring. Also gone are CB Cordrea Tankersley, DT Carlos Watkins and RB Wayne Gallman who all contributed heavily in dethroning the Alabama Crimson Tide back in January.

As usual, Alabama also saw a massive exodus of core players bolting to the NFL with no less than seven starters being picked in the first two rounds alone. The Tide still has QB Jalen Hurts in their ranks and if he fails to meet expectations, Alabama have plenty of big-time talent waiting in the wings. The sophomore will need to be more consistent as a passer and there will be no excuses this time around as he will throw to one of the nation’s best receiving corps.

The Crimson Tide will be tested right off the bat as they begin their 2017 season with an epic showdown against Florida State on September 2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Georgia. The Seminoles also figure to be ranked in the Top-5 to start the year as the 2013 National Champions will seek to stockpile double-digit wins for a sixth straight season. QB Deondre Francois, who threw for 3,350 yards and 20 touchdowns will only get better as he embarks the season as a sophomore.

Rounding up the potential best in college football are the Ohio State Buckeyes, who under new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will attempt to improve a shoddy passing attack which misfired on numerous occasions last season. QB J.T. Barrett’s completion percentage and yards per passes took a plunge in his last two campaigns and Wilson’s arrival could significantly elevate the senior’s passing abilities.

Washington (+2500), USC (+700) and Penn State (+1400) are three other programs that could make waves this upcoming season. The Nittany Lions missed the CFB playoff by a hair in 2016 but they have a great opportunity to crack the Top-5 as they are loaded on offense with QB Trace McSorley and RB Saquon Barkley still in the mix. USC has a game-changer and Heisman hopeful in QB Sam Darnold while the Huskies is still a force to be reckon on the defensive side of the ball.
