ALDS Game 1 Betting Odds & Aengus Moorehead MLB Predictions: Boston Red Sox vs Houston Astros

Boston Red Sox vs. Houston Astros

Red Sox: 0-0 (0-0 V)
Astros: 0-0 (0-0 H)
When: 4:08 PM ET, Thursday, October 5, 2017
Where: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
TV: MLB Network

The Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros will meet for the first time beyond the regular season as the two AL rivals lock horns in the opener of the ALDS with the showdown set to be staged Thursday afternoon at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The two clubs won their respective divisions but the Red Sox had to wait until the last weekend of the regular season to seal their fate as the AL East winner over the New York Yankees.

Boston and Houston met seven times during the year and they matched up very well with Houston edging the Red Sox 4-3. Incidentally, each won a series on foreign soil so the Red Sox has to feel confident in the opener especially with ace Chris Sale slated for Thursday’s caper. However, Boston did finish its season at home against the Astros and the visitors promptly took three of four games against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have lost five of their last seven so you could argue that they are limping into this ALDS and that outside of starter Drew Pomeranz, who is slated to pitch the second game of this series, the rest of the starting lineup has not been up to par of late. The Astros, on the contrary, are the hottest team with Cleveland entering the postseason. They have won six of their last seven contests and 14 of their last 17 coming into this series.

LH Chris Sale (17-8, 2.90 ERA) will have an opportunity to make a name for himself as he gets the call for the Red Sox while RH Justin Verlander (15-8, 3.36 ERA) will look to maintain his torrid form as he performs in the opener for the Astros.

After limiting the Baltimore Orioles to zero runs on four hits in eight innings in a 9-0 win prior to his last start Sale may have ruined his chances for a first career Cy Young in his last outing. The 28-year old was tagged for five runs on eight hits and a career-high four homeruns in five innings in a 9-4 loss to Toronto on September 26. Sale will be making his first postseason start so nerves could be a factor. The Floridian is 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA in 6-career starts against Houston.

Verlander has been nothing short of sublime since being acquired from Detroit back on September 1. The 34-year old veteran has kept a 5-0 record along with a ridiculous 1.06 ERA in five starts since he moved to Houston. In his final start, Verlander allowed two runs across six hits and two homeruns with 11 strikeouts in six innings in a 12-2 win against Texas on September 27. The Virginia native is 5-5 with a 2.88 ERA in 17-career starts against Boston.

Mybookie Sportsbook has the Astros favorites at 135-moneyline with the total sitting at 7.
