Yankees: 0-2 (0-0 H)

The Houston Astros will attempt to maintain their winning form and take a substantial 3-0 ALCS lead as they resume hostilities against the New York Yankees in Game 3 with the showdown set to be broadcasted Monday night on Fox Sports 1 at 8:08 p.m. ET and live from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. For the second consecutive series, the Yankees have fallen in the first two games but thankfully, they have plenty of time to get back in the series with 5 more games to play.

New York is certainly capable of turning things around as they have done it in the ALDS when they won the last three contests against the Cleveland Indians who hadn’t lost three straight since mid-July. However, Houston poses a much bigger challenge as they led the majors in runs scored and were ranked fifth in the American League with a 4.12 ERA. It was Houston’s pitching that stood out in the first two games with the Astros limiting the Yankees to just two combined runs.

After Dallas Keuchel threw seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over the Yankees on Friday, it was veteran right hander Justin Verlander’s turn to shine and boy! Did he ever. Verlander was simply sublime in a game in which he completed with just a run allowed across five hits and 13 strikeouts on 124 pitches. The 34-year old won all his games in the postseason while maintaining a superb 2.04 ERA during that stretch.

RH Charlie Morton (14-7, 3.62 ERA - 0-0, 4.15 ERA) will try to notch his first-career postseason win as he takes the mound for the Astros while LH CC Sabathia (14-9, 3.69 ERA - 0-0, 3.72 ERA) will look to save the Yankees yet again as he gets the call for Game 3 for New York.

Morton has been a pleasant surprise for the Astros as he has won a career-high 14 games for Houston this season. The 33-year old was the starter against Boston in Game 4 in the ALDS and he was decent in a game in which he allowed two runs on seven hits and six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision last week. The Astros ended up winning the game 5-4 and eliminated Boston. The New Jersey native is 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA in 2-career starts against the Yankees.

Sabathia will look to earn his tenth postseason win as he makes his third start of the playoffs for the Yankees. The 37-year old didn’t factor in the decision in his last trip to the mound last Thursday. In the decisive Game 5 of the ALDS against Cleveland, Sabathia allowed two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in New York’s 5-2 win. The California native is 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA in 3-career starts against the Astros.

The Astros have won three of four at Yankee Stadium this season but that was way back in the month of May. The Yankees are desperate and with the possibility of tumbling in a 0-3 hole, expect the pitching arsenal to be full-fledged for Game 3. Yankees 5, Astros 3.
