Reduced Field Heads South of the Border for WGC-Mexico Championship

2019 WGC-Mexico Championship Expert Betting Picks, PGA Golf Odds and Tournament Preview

After two grueling weeks with cold, rainy, windy, endless stoppages and slow play, the PGA Tour thankfully leaves California for a pit stop in the warm atmosphere south of the border as 72 of the finest golfers in the world head to Mexico City for the first World Golf Championship event set to begin Thursday morning at the Club de Golf Chapultepec in Naucalpan de Juarez just outside of the capital city. In all, 72 players will compete in the limited field with 47 of the Top-50 players on hand. With no cut, fans will get to see their favorite players all 4 days.

Unlike the past two weeks when lousy weather took center stage, the forecast in Mexico City calls for sunny skies throughout the weekend. However, while players won’t be annoyed with Mother Nature’s moodiness this week, they will be confronted by a layout which looks nor perhaps plays like any other venue in the PGA Tour than the 7,345 yards design or condition-induced Chapultepec. At nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, caddies will need to bring their calculators to figure out yardages as the ball tends to travel about 15% further.

That said, when you do the math, the course equates to roughly about 6,600 yards which is basically the shortest course on Tour so distance will not be a major factor but accuracy will be with the course heavily tree-lined forcing the players to circumnavigate around them if one should get wild off the tee. The greens are also small and sloping guarded by bunkers. It’s a course where if you keep yourself in position then you are going to have a slew of scoring chances and scrambling will also be a key attribute here.

The field includes Tiger Woods, who makes his third start of 2019 following a T-15 at the Genesis Open and defending Champion Phil Mickelson, who won in a playoff against Justin Thomas with the latter entering the event as the odds-on favorite +900, according to Bovada Sportsbook. Dustin Johnson, who won the inaugural event in Mexico in 2017, is second favorite at +1100 tied with Rory McIlroy, with Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler, all at +1600, rounding up the Top-6.

Unlike the last two editions of the WGC-Mexico Championship, the schedule is far more travel friendly this year. Previously, the Tour went from Los Angeles to Florida for the Honda Classic and then to Mexico which made zero sense. Still, fatigue may already be in the cards especially if players who were submitted to play the last two events in California as it was the case for Mickelson and Johnson. Thomas skipped Pebble Beach as well as Tiger. Fowler is the freshest of the favorites having skipped the West Coast and is coming off a win in his last outing in Phoenix.

The Pick: Rickie Fowler 16/1 (+1600).

Propping up:

  1. Take Brooks Koepka -130 over Phil Mickelson EVEN
  2. Take Rickie Fowler +300 for Top-5
  3. Take Kiradech Aphibarnrat +1000 for Top-10
  4. Take Justin Thomas -125 over Rory McIlroy -105
  5. Take Tommy Fleetwood +550 for Top-5
