Less than Stellar Field Begin Florida Swing at the Honda Classic

2019 Honda Classic Betting Preview, PGA Golf Odds and Expert Picks

After the cream of the crop treaded the course in last week’s WGC event in Mexico City, this year’s field for the first installment of a four-week stretch of tournaments in the Sunshine state is certainly feeling the effects of the new PGA Tour calendar. While 47 of the Top-50 players competed south of the border last week, only three of the Top-15 players in the world will be on hand to compete in the 47th edition of the Honda Classic which is set to begin Thursday morning at the famed PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.

Indeed, the PGA Tour hasn’t done the Honda Classic any favors with their revamped schedule as most players even the ones that live down the street from the course, including Tiger Woods, have decided to skip the event to rest up for one of the most popular venues on tour with the Bay Hill Invitational coming next week and the Players Championship in two weeks’ time. Unfortunately, no Dustin Johnson who won the WGC-Mexico Championship on Sunday Woods, Phil Mickelson or world No. 1 Justin Rose and past winner Rory McIlroy in the field, among a few notables.

With four of the last five winning scores ending in at single digits under par, bettors were already served notice of the kind of the challenge awaiting the players this week. PGA National is one of the toughest courses outside of the main major agenda, and as a former host of the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup the difficulty level is entirely apparent. Designed by Tom Fazio, the terrain was given an refurbishment by Jack Nicklaus, and the Golden Bear must have been in a particularly unruly mood when he designed the “Bear Trap”; the trio of holes from 15-17 that will give players fits.

Unlike last week’s venue in Mexico City, PGA National is a haven for supreme ball-strikers as the course is basically a water park with water hazards on 14 of the 18 holes. Although PGA National is not a links course, it's an exposed and wind-affected venue so the fact that we've seen three Open Champions win here is perhaps not surprising. The betting favorite entering this event is defending Champion Justin Thomas at +500 odds, according to Bovada Sportsbook, with 2017 Champion Rickie Fowler following at +1000. Brooks Koepka +1200, former winner Adam Scott +1400 and Sergio Garcia +1600 rounding up the Top-5.

The Pick: Webb Simpson 20/1 (+2000).

Propping up:

  1. Take Brooks Koepka -130 over Garry Woodland EVEN
  2. Take Rickie Fowler +185 for Top-5
  3. Take Russell Henley +650 for Top-10
  4. Take Justin Thomas -165 over Rickie Fowler -125
  5. Take Alex Noren +700 for Top-5
