Florida Swing Rolls on as Players Converge to Bay Hill

2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational Betting Preview, PGA Golf Odds and Expert Picks

Although only three of the Top-15 players in the world competed in last week’s inaugural Florida stopover at the Honda Classic, the tournament itself still produced a thrilling spectacle with the presence of three-time major champions Brooks Koepka and fan favorite Rickie Fowler providing the star-caliber entertainment. But in the end it was the unlikeliest of winners that got the job done in Keith Mitchell who punched his ticket for this upcoming event at the Arnold Palmer Invitational which is set to begin Thursday morning at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Bay Hill, Florida.

When he purchased the land in 1976, Arnold Palmer got his hands on a rather characterless layout. But thanks to his dedication and reputable eye for what makes a great track, the King turned Bay Hill into a layout that has hosted a flagship PGA TOUR event for over four decades. One of the most recent refurbishments, which came in 2014, saw fairways widened and trees removed, and the previously very tough track became much easier in the process, with winning scores ranging from -11 to -19 since the overhaul .Yet, there are still plenty of challenges awaiting the players at this 7,419 yard Par 72.

Water is in play on ten holes, and there are bunkers aplenty peppering the layout. Doglegging holes also test the ball striking and course management expertise of the field. The Bermuda greens, which are a decent size and tend to run at a steady 11.5 on the stimpmeter, offer up no major technical hitches. So what are the layout’s key hindrances? The wind tends to be a factor, as it often does in the Sunshine State, and a reference should also be made of the four Par 3s which measure a lengthy 199, 215, 221 and 231 yards respectively. Strategy on the four reachable Par 5s will be paramount as winners of this event have historically dominated the longer holes.

Six of the world’s top ten, according to the OWGR, will tee it off on Thursday, including defending champion Rory McIlroy, who is the favorite at +650 odds, according to Bovada Sportsbook, Koepka and FedExCup champion Justin Rose are tied at +1100 while Fowler and 2016 winner Jason Day round out the Top 5 at +1200. Masters Champion Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson and the Open winner Francesco Molinari will also be looking to make their moves at the famous track. Eight-time champion Tiger Woods, who was scheduled to tread the course this week, withdrew from the event citing neck problems.

The Pick: Justin Rose 11/1 (+1100).
