About the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

The 1 1/16-mile, $2 million Breeders' Cup® Juvenile Fillies features two-year-old Thoroughbred fillies at their best. This series had produced 17 out of 20 winners that went on to become year-end champions. In 2008, Stardom Bound was the 8/5 favorite and came from way behind to win it at a time of 1:40.99. Dream Express came in second while Sky Diva took third place.

The one-mile, $1 million Breeders' Cup® Juvenile Fillies Turf was run for the first time in 2008 and was part of "Female Championship Day", the first day of the Breeders' Cup where all five of the races for female horses were carded together. Like the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, the Juvenile Fillies Turf is limited to 12 starters. In 2008, Maram won it at a time of 1:35.15 while Heart Shaped came in second and Laragh took third place.

The $2 million Breeders' Cup® Filly & Mare Turf was first introduced to the Breeders' Cup World Championships in 1999. The race is either 1 1/4 miles or 1 3/8 miles, depending on the configuration of the host track's turf course. This year, it will be run at the 1 3/8 mile distance. The winner in 2008 was Forever Together at a time of 2:01.58, while Sealy Hill came in second and Wait a While took third.

The $1 million Breeders' Cup® Filly & Mare Sprint was introduced to the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Monmouth Park in 2007. Going into the race in 2009, Indian Blessing was the 9/5 favorite but it was the 3/1 Ventura who would win it in the end at a time of 1:19.90. Indian Blessing placed second, while Zaftig took third.

The $2 million Breeders' Cup® Juvenile is a 1 1/16-mile Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old colts and geldings and is widely considered to provide a preview of next year's Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown races. In 2008, Midshipman won the race at a time of 1:40.94, while favorite Square Eddie placed second and Street Hero took third.

The $1 million Breeders' Cup® Dirt Mile for three-year-olds and up was introduced to the Breeders' Cup World Championships in 2007 at Monmouth Park and in 2008 it attracted a field of 12 horses. Well Armed was the favorite but finished 9th. Instead, the race was won by Albertus Maximus at a time of 1:33.41, while Rebellion took second place and Two Step Salsa placed third.

The 1 1/2-mile, $500,000 Breeders' Cup® Marathon for Thoroughbred horses 3 years old and up was one of the three new races introduced to the Breeders' Cup World Championships in 2008. It is an interesting race, given that there are few 1 1/2-mile dirt races in North America besides the Belmont Stakes, and usually attracts a smaller field of horses. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint, has been added to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships beginning this year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint will be run as a six furlong race open to 2-year-old colts, geldings and fillies, and will be contested on the main track for a purse of $500,000. The new race will have a maximum of 14 starters.
